Some staircases fill a space. This one transforms it.⁠

As our client reimagined their home, Bisca created a dramatic helical staircase connecting three floors, turning an underused entrance hall into a striking architectural feature.

Working closely with interior designer Klaudia Dziak of Studio Twenty, the staircase brings together rich dark oak, hand-forged bronze and slender steel. Every element was developed specifically for the space, from the geometry of the staircase to the tactile material palette and finely crafted details.⁠

The result is a staircase with real presence - distinctive, functional and completely at home within its surroundings.⁠

What makes a staircase feel like it belongs?

For this Surrey property, it came down to choosing the right materials.

Character oak introduces warmth and texture, while low-iron glass allows light to pass freely through the space, keeping the staircase feeling open and unobtrusive.

What can a blacksmith create from a solid bar of bronze?

For Sam, it starts with heat, force and experience.

Inside our forge, solid bronze is heated before the fly press is used to form each bar for a bespoke balustrade. It’s a precise process, requiring control, judgement and a deep understanding of the material.

But the work doesn’t stop there. Each element will be refined through further stages before the finished balustrade emerges.

With traditional blacksmithing at the heart of our workshop, ambitious designs can be brought to life by the craftspeople who make them.

What if the most striking feature of a staircase only appears when the lights go down?

For this new build property, staircase lighting was designed into the architecture from the outset, using concealed LED lighting within the handrail and a shadow gap around the curved landing wall to create a soft, atmospheric glow.

A discreet lighting apron in the ceiling adds to the illusion, highlighting the slender structure and stone edges while making the staircase appear to float within the space.

By day, the natural beauty of Yorkshire stone takes centre stage. By night, carefully integrated staircase lighting transforms its presence entirely.

Designed to transform the space.

Our client had already transformed their Surrey home, but the staircase remained narrow, steep and awkwardly positioned, restricting movement and failing to make the most of the dramatic full-height feature window.⁠
⁠
Bisca created a graceful floating staircase with elegant curves, refined materials and integrated lighting, opening up the entrance and allowing natural light to flow freely.
⁠
The outcome? A challenging layout, reimagined as a defining feature of the home.
