That's it for the 2026 season at Cold Comfort Plants . Paul and I would like to say a huge thank you to every single customer as well as those who follow the page from afar. We will be open again mid March 2027 if we are spared.
What a season it's been. I knew when we escaped unscathed from storms and wind until the end of June that some catastrophic weather event was inevitable because of Sod's Law and sure enough a swingeing drought and ridiculous hot weather came along to fry mine and everyone else's much loved gardens. We've survived, the rain has arrived but we are a bit battle weary.
Never mind, us gardeners are most certainly not faint hearted so a special thanks to those who came this weekend to 'fill a few gaps'. That shows real spirit in the face of adversity.
The page will continue just slightly less frequently over the winter. Your support both at the nursery, at the NGS open garden days and through the FB page has been greatly. appreciated. Thankyou!

We have had a busy day today, dodging showers, seeing rainbows and selling plants. If you made it to our end of season sale today it was lovely to see you and I very much hope you were pleased with your purchases. If you are coming tomorrow there is still loads of stock - I've just refilled the tables. We still have a few of our succulent troughs and bowls.
Open tomorrow (Sunday 30th Aug) at 10.30am till 4.30pm.
We take card and cash. Looking at the forecast an umbrella might be useful - thank goodness.

Full! It's our last nursery opening of the 2026 season. Saturday 29th Aug and Sunday 30th Aug 10.30am to 4.30pm each day. What a season it's been. Started well, but ended badly. Dry, hot and left me despairing for my cottage garden built on soft, damp summers. Oh well! The rain has come and we replace what didn't make it.

Anyway, we will be delighted to welcome you later to see our lovely stock which is valiantly out there looking good come rain or shine.

Looking good! We are all ready for our end of season sale. Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th Aug 10.30am to 4.30pm each day.
We have got a great mix of lovely plants at good prices. About 90% are reduced, with just a few new ones at full price (this includes Eryngium Blaukappe and some very special Verbena Hastata Pink Spires).
We are looking forward to welcoming you. Please be aware if we get very busy parking will be in the field - but there will be a sign at the top of the drive if we need to use the field.
I think it will be wet, but I'm pretty sure us gardeners won't mind that. We don't have any boxes left so you may want to bring your own box for the car.
Don't forget we have our lovely Succulent Bowls and Troughs- first come first served. Scroll back a couple of days for pictures. Card or cash payment. Happy to answer any questions in comments or by direct message. See you soon.

I can't tell you how good that rain was yesterday - except you probably feel exactly the same. I'm hoping it reached you all, but if it didn't tomorrow looks like a dead cert for rain everywhere in the county, and lots of it.
Every day for the last six weeks or so has been spent battling to keep stuff alive - sharing water both in terms of the resource and my time and it has felt exhausting.
I know, as fellow gardeners, you know.
Now I feel I can at least get on with what I want to do, especially propagating.
The tables are full for our end of season sale now. Mindful of gaps to fill after this summer i'm keeping a few bits back, but there is some lovely stuff for sale. I've got a lot of hardy geraniums this year £7 for a really substantial plant in a 3 litre pot as well as some smaller ones for less.
Remember if there's anything you want that you don't see on the tables, always ask as I may have something tucked away round the back or even some seeds for you to try growing your own.

This plant is the one I get asked about most when people visit our garden. It's Erysimum Mutabile, a very old fashioned variety of Perennial Wallflower. I often don't have any for sale as it looks absolutely miserable in a pot and nobody buys it.
This year, Paul has done some cuttings because I need new plants and I have a few extra so if you are up at the weekend do ask me. They won't be on display as they look so sad everyone will pass them by.
They will need a little nurturing in the pot, but should be OK to go out by the end of October or you can keep them and put them out in Spring.
They last three or four years and then get a bit woody but for the second, third and fourth year you should have an amazing Spring display that lasts for months.

This feels like such a long time ago, but in fact it was only 15th June this year. If you zoom in towards the back right you will see some tiny very bright coral red flowers. These are Heuchera Firefly and a very popular plant that I usually sell out of. They are one of the few Heucheras that you buy for their flowers rather than their leaves. They make a long lasting, manageable pop of colour over a long period of time in any perennial bed. Anyway, I have just potted on a new lot of these and they will be available this weekend.
Don't forget it's our END OF SEASON SALE. We''ve already had a lot of interest, so don't miss out.

Everything in the garden feels like a bit of a battle at the moment, but we are fighting on and today we recovered the polytunnel. Having done it once before was such a benefit. I think partly because we were a lot less frightened of ripping it (it withstood Storm Darragh so it must be quite tough), and also we understood the pleating principle round the doors. Last time our pleats faced upwards so were constantly filled with manky water. The hot weather helped a lot too by making the plastic softer.
Anyway, we've just got the front door frame to do tomorrow and it's done. Hooray.

This photo is from not much more than a month ago when the garden was still withstanding the lack of water. I knew my inordinate pride in the garden would come with a fall. Sadly I was right and then some. My poor garden is on life support now. I won't post a picture as it will only depress you, but I have stripped back a lot of stuff, partly because it's dead, and partly to make it easier for the small amount of rain, and and water i can get on there to get to the roots.
I'm pretty sure most of the gardeners who read this page will be feeling the same, and many will have hosepipe bans and have experienced far hotter weather than we have here. Believe me, I am feeling your pain.
I shan't give up because I know eventually things will recover, but it is depressing isn't it?

I really hope you will be able to pop up and see us for our end of season sale. I've just been sorting out the tables and we have some LOVELY stuff. Quite a lot is half price, some even better than half price. Great if you want to fill space or just like a bargain. Once it starts raining again - and looking at the forecast I think it may be doing just that for our sale - September is a great time for planting hardy perennials.
