A day well spent investing in our engineers. šŸ›—

Some of the HLS team recently took part in a Liftup training session hosted by The Platform Lift Company, giving our engineers another opportunity to develop their technical knowledge and skills.

Continuous training is a big part of how we work at HLS. The lift industry never stands still, and giving our engineers access to hands-on training helps us maintain the high standards we expect across lift servicing, maintenance and repairs.

A big thank you to The Platform Lift Company for hosting us and for their continued commitment to training and development within the lift industry. It’s an ethos that very much aligns with our own.

The team are already looking forward to the next one, whether that’s out with one of our industry partners or back at the HLS Training Hub.

Great day, great team and plenty learned.

Summer can be a busy time for lifts.

Hotels, visitor attractions, retail, healthcare and commercial buildings can all see increased footfall, meaning more journeys and more demand on the equipment.

September is a good opportunity to take stock.

Have there been any recurring faults? Are the doors behaving differently? Has the ride changed? Are there recommendations from previous service visits that still need attention?

Small changes can be easy to live with while a lift is still running, but they can also be an early indication that something needs investigating.

Heading into autumn, now is a good time to make sure your lift maintenance is up to date and any outstanding issues have been addressed.

Hampshire Lift Services provides lift maintenance, servicing and repairs across Hampshire and the South Coast.

Maintaining lifts in marine environments is very different from maintaining lifts in commercial or residential buildings.

Passenger vessels, cruise ships and offshore environments place unique demands on lift systems. Salt exposure, constant vibration, restricted access and strict safety requirements all mean that standard maintenance approaches are often not enough.

Marine lifts require engineers who understand both the equipment and the environment it operates in.

Here are a few reasons why specialist knowledge matters.

1. Corrosion and environmental exposure
Marine environments expose lift components to salt air and moisture, which accelerates corrosion. Engineers must understand how this affects mechanical components, electrics and finishes, and how to maintain them correctly.

2. Constant movement and vibration
Unlike buildings, vessels are constantly moving. Lift systems must be maintained and adjusted with this in mind to ensure smooth operation, accurate levelling and long term reliability.

3. Restricted working environments
Shipboard installations often involve tight plant spaces and complex layouts. Engineers need experience working safely and efficiently within these conditions.

4. Specialist components and configurations
Marine lifts frequently use bespoke designs and components that differ from standard building installations. Maintenance requires familiarity with these systems and the manufacturers involved.

5. Operational sensitivity
When lifts fail on a vessel, the impact can be significant for passengers, crew and operations. Maintenance must prioritise reliability and careful planning to avoid disruption.

At Hampshire Lift Services, marine lift maintenance is approached with the same care and precision required by the environment itself. Our engineers understand the technical and operational challenges that come with working at sea.

Huge congratulations to Mark Chamberlain, who became the IBO Super Lightweight World Champion after beating Piers O’Leary at Dublin’s 3Arena in August.

Hampshire Lift Services has been proud to sponsor Mark and support his journey, so seeing him bring that world title home was a very special moment for all of us.

Mark popped into HLS HQ with his extremely well earned belt this week, although we’re not sure everyone was quite ready to hand it back!

We’re also delighted to be stepping up our support and becoming a main sponsor as Mark heads into the next chapter of his career.

A local lad with some very big ambitions, and plenty more still to come.

Next stop, December. šŸ‘Š

Congratulations, Mark. The whole HLS team is behind you.

Choosing a lift contractor should never be a tick box exercise.

Yet too often, decisions are made on cost alone, without fully understanding what sits behind the contract.

Facilities managers are not just buying maintenance.
They are managing risk, uptime, and responsibility for the people who rely on those lifts every day.

The right questions upfront change everything:

• What actually happens when something goes wrong?
• Are you maintaining the lift or just servicing the contract?
• Do they understand the environment your lift operates in?

These are the questions that separate a supplier from a partner.

At HLS, we see the consequences when these things are overlooked.

We also see the difference when they are not.

If you are reviewing your current provision, it is worth asking the questions others do not.

What does a facilities manager actually need from a lift contractor?

Not more reports.

Not more excuses.

And certainly not more chasing.

What facilities managers really need is confidence.

Confidence that lifts will remain safe, reliable and operational.

Confidence that when issues arise, they'll be communicated clearly and honestly.

Confidence that recommendations are based on what is genuinely needed, not what's easiest to sell.

Behind every lift is a facilities team balancing compliance, budgets, contractors, building users and operational pressures.

When a lift goes out of service, the impact often stretches far beyond the equipment itself. Accessibility can be affected, complaints increase, planned work gets disrupted and valuable time is diverted away from other priorities.

That's why the best lift contractors do more than maintain equipment.

They communicate proactively.

They respond when needed.

They take ownership.

And they help clients plan ahead to reduce risk before it becomes disruption.

Because ultimately, facilities managers aren't looking for a lift contractor.

They're looking for a partner they can rely on.

Most people assume lift maintenance is the same everywhere.

In reality, no two sites are ever the same.

A lift in a care home supports residents who rely on it for daily movement, safety and independence. When it goes down, it impacts far more than access.

In education settings, lifts are under pressure at very specific times of day. High footfall between lessons means reliability isn’t optional, it is essential to keeping everything moving.

In commercial buildings, downtime quickly becomes a business issue. Staff, visitors and operations all depend on lifts working without interruption.

And in marine environments, the challenges shift again. Constant motion, harsh conditions and limited access to support mean maintenance needs to be approached differently from the ground up.

Same equipment. Completely different demands.

This is why understanding the environment is just as important as understanding the lift itself.

It is not about ticking a box. It is about knowing what is at stake on every site.

The HLS team were out in full force this week tackling a particularly challenging motor and gearbox replacement.

The new equipment needed to make its way up several flights of stairs, through some very tight spaces and eventually into the roof space ready for installation.

It was heavy, awkward and definitely tested the team, but plenty of determination, teamwork and a fair amount of sweat got it where it needed to be.

There’s still work to be done on this project, but a great start from the team and a good example of the reality behind some of the lift repair and modernisation work our engineers take on.

Great work from everyone involved. šŸ’™
