We could easily have left it alone. But we spotted a way to make it better for the people fitting it, so we did.

A tie now keeps the red retaining clip attached to the actuator and ready to use, making installation, servicing and repairs quicker and easier.

It’s a small change, but across every actuator on every manifold, small gains add up.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭, 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐬.
That is what a single zone gives you: one stat driving up to four actuators on the wiring centre. Anything past that needs a second zone and a second stat, which is a first fix decision rather than a commissioning one.
Cable is 1.5mm three core and earth back to the stat. Live, neutral and earth as you would expect, and switched live to A2.
Then the bit that catches people. A1 needs a linking wire across to live, or there is no feed across the switch and the stat does nothing at all.
If that sounds familiar, it should. It is the second time in this series that a missing link stops a system dead.

How many zones do you typically run on a four-bedroom house?

A generic UFH manual can tell a homeowner how a product works.

It cannot tell them:
🔸Which rooms are on which heating zone
🔸What the settings were at handover
🔸Where the pipework runs beneath their floor
🔸How their particular UFH system should behave

Those are plot-specific details.

Since June 2022, Section 9 of Approved Document L has required homeowner information to be specific to the home. From 24 March 2027, Regulation 40C tightens the requirements around how that information is provided.

There is also a practical reason to get it right now.

Poor handover can turn a perfectly functioning screeded UFH system into a first-winter customer care call simply because the homeowner is using it like the radiator system in their previous home.

Despite advances in system design and building performance, these misconceptions continue to circulate:

1️⃣ "UFH causes overheating"
☀️ Overheating risk is driven by:
✅ Solar gain
✅ Glazing levels
✅ Shading strategy
✅ Ventilation design
It is not caused by the heat emitter itself.
Modern overheating assessments evaluate the building's performance, not whether it uses UFH. And with a correctly designed reversible heat pump system, the same floor can even provide cooling. ❄️

2️⃣ "Retrofit means ripping up floors for thick screeds"
🔨 Not anymore.
Today's retrofit solutions include:
✅ Thin-build systems from around 20mm
✅ Low-profile overlay systems
✅ Dry plate systems
Many can be installed over a suitable existing floor with minimal disruption and without significant floor-height issues.

3️⃣ "UFH is too complicated for homeowners"
📱 A properly designed system is often simpler than radiators.
The control logic works quietly in the background, while the homeowner typically uses:
✔️ A room thermostat
✔️ An app
✔️ A straightforward handover
That's it.

Before you start thinking about what’s under the floor, start at the manifold.

Most UFH call-outs fall into a handful of familiar symptoms, and the fault is often far easier to reach than you might expect.

Dry screed is cheaper, easy to get hold of, and you can lay it room by room. It also goes down considerably thicker and takes far longer before anyone can work on it.
Liquid is thinner, self-levelling, and workable within a day or two. It costs more, and it encapsulates the pipe better, which is the part that actually affects how the floor performs.
If you are pouring liquid on a first floor, seal everything first. It finds gaps that dry screed never would, and it finds them on the ceiling below.

📋 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐔𝐅𝐇 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬.
Most retrofit headaches don't start on site. They start with a quote built on assumptions.
1️⃣ How much build-up height is available?
📏 This determines which systems are viable from the outset:
✅ Screeded systems
✅ Low-profile overlay systems
✅ Plate systems
Without this information, you're already narrowing your options blindly.

2️⃣ What's the heat source?
🔥 More importantly:
What flow temperature can it realistically deliver?
Flow temperature should be established through design, not guessed at the quoting stage.
Key factors include:
✔️ Required heat output
✔️ System construction
✔️ Pipe spacing
✔️ Heat source capability

3️⃣ What's the final floor finish?
🪵 Flooring matters.
Wood and many LVT products often have maximum surface temperature limits, commonly around 27°C (always defer to the flooring manufacturer's specification).
That limit can directly affect the heat output achievable from the floor.

⚠️ And beneath all three questions is the most important one:
Has anyone calculated the room heat loss?
If not, the quote is a guess with a price attached.
