We don’t believe that the client should have to pay for the radio comms which the security team needs to use to effectively do the job they are being paid to do which is why we are often investing in our fleet of communications which is why we have a multitude of handsets as well as 2 radio repeaters ensuring that we have the best possible communication capability without the clients having to pay for it.

And if the client needs radios for their own communications we will hire them at a reasonable price

🔥🚧 BONFIRE SEASON IS HERE – LET’S TALK ROAD CLOSURE SAFETY 🚧🔥

As bonfire season gets underway, thousands of people will be attending bonfires, torchlit processions and fireworks displays across Sussex.

But a safe event isn’t just about security at the gate — proper traffic management is critical.

🦺 A HI-VIS TABARD ISN’T ALWAYS ENOUGH

One of the biggest things we see at events is people being placed on road closures wearing nothing more than a basic sleeveless hi-vis tabard.

That isn’t necessarily an adequate level of PPE for someone working close to moving traffic.

The HSE specifically identifies temporary traffic management workers as requiring a higher standard of high-visibility clothing because vehicles are moving nearby at potentially significant speeds.

For this type of work, the appropriate PPE can include:

🦺 Long-sleeved high-visibility jacket
👖 High-visibility trousers
🔦 Appropriate reflective/retroreflective materials
🥾 Suitable safety footwear
🧤 Additional PPE where the risk assessment requires it

The HSE states that temporary traffic management workers may require high-visibility long-sleeved jackets and high-visibility trousers, rather than simply a sleeveless tabard. (HSE)

Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual also requires workers involved in temporary traffic management to wear appropriate high-visibility warning clothing, with the required class depending on the circumstances. On motorways and other high-speed roads, full-length sleeves are specifically addressed. (Gov.uk)

PPE should be selected based on the actual risk — not simply because “everyone has a hi-vis on.”

🔴⚪ AND DON’T FORGET THE BARRIERS

Traffic barriers aren’t simply something you put across the road.

The correct traffic-facing arrangement, signs, cones, barriers, lighting and positioning should be determined as part of the traffic management arrangement.

The Department for Transport’s guidance explains that barriers are used to mark the boundaries of areas of highway closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, with additional road danger lighting potentially required at night or in poor visibility. (GOV.UK)

For unlit roads and areas where visibility may be limited, Dragon Event Services Ltd also carries additional lighting to help improve visibility around road closures, barriers and traffic-management points. Lighting requirements should always be assessed as part of the overall traffic-management plan.

🚦 ASK YOUR SECURITY COMPANY ABOUT TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT TRAINING

If your security contractor is going to be responsible for:

• Road closures
• Traffic control
• Vehicle access points
• Stop/Go operations
• Traffic marshaling
• Managing vehicles around a closure

then ask:

“What traffic management training and competence do your staff have?”

Being SIA licensed does not automatically mean someone is trained or competent to carry out traffic management duties.

Chapter 8 specifically refers to training and competency, with National Highways Sector Scheme 12D covering relevant traffic management training and competency arrangements. (Gov.uk)

Event organisers should consider the requirements and guidance applicable to their event, including:

🔥 THIS BONFIRE SEASON — ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Before appointing a contractor, don’t just ask:

❌ “Are your staff SIA licensed?”

Also ask:

✅ Are they appropriately trained for the duties they’re undertaking?
✅ Do they understand temporary traffic management?
✅ Is the correct PPE being provided?
✅ Are long-sleeved high-vis jackets and high-vis trousers required by the risk assessment?
✅ Are barriers and signs correctly positioned?
✅ Is the traffic-facing side of the barrier correctly presented?
✅ Is adequate lighting provided for night-time closures?
✅ Is additional lighting available for unlit roads?
✅ Has emergency access been considered?
✅ Is there a suitable traffic management plan?

Because putting someone in a hi-vis tabard and giving them a torch doesn’t automatically make a safe road closure.

🔥🚧 Good event safety starts before the first member of the public arrives.
