Your home needs to fulfil so many different functions, particularly when you have a family; homework space, play area, eating, sleeping, working, and, of course, storage that really works. It can be a challenge to organise your space in a way that looks pleasing, works seamlessly, and fulfils all the functions that you need it to, can’t it?

The client really wanted to bring the outside in and create a room that was flooded with natural light, so we installed another set of bifold doors into the kitchen area to match the existing. Storage is provided in the utility room, which includes a pantry so that all those awkward items that are difficult to fit into the kitchen units can be safely stored and easily located when needed, leaving a clean-lined kitchen area.

We removed a wall to open up the room, then the client decided to show off the beam by painting it a lovely shade of pink to add a quirky touch to the room. The client chose a rounded island area with a hob, fully integrated appliances in the sunshine yellow kitchen area, and modern styling for the entrance door to the utility and family area to the right of the kitchen.

Making the most of space in this way is one of the things I love most about my job. Creating rooms that really work for the client, incorporating everything that is important to them, and seeing their delight when they finally have a space that they love to look at and use. Well, that makes everything worthwhile.

Ever wished you could magically transform your small kitchen into a stunning dining kitchen that is the envy of your friends? Are you looking for more cupboard space or a more workable design but have no idea where to begin? Check out this recent project for some great ideas.

This house had a breakfast room next to a small kitchen area. The homeowners wanted to make the most of the two rooms and create a larger kitchen with a more open-plan layout. To incorporate the two areas seamlessly, we included a breakfast bar and opened up some of the walls to allow the new kitchen area to lead naturally into the existing dining area. Once the rooms were opened up, the space was flooded with natural light and allowed for the amazing views to be fully appreciated from this room.

I worked alongside Russell House Design who designed and installed this gorgeous yet functional kitchen. Mike from Russell House Design is a perfectionist and you can see this in the final project. He also provides Project Management for building work and has a long-standing and trusted relationship with a number of builders whom he uses regularly.

If you are looking to update and extend your kitchen, whether you are looking for an internal makeover or an extension, get in touch with me for a chat, and together we can plan your dream kitchen.

Planning applications are going to double in price, and the deadline to submit BACs payments is today.

I just wanted to express my gratitude to all my clients who were at the scheme stage and who have worked with me to prepare the designs for the planning stage, enabling us to meet the deadline. Not all my clients were ready, but the ones that were have worked with me to achieve this. I am so grateful for their prompt replies and payments!

Thank you to Karen from SussPlanning for double-checking one of the projects to make sure it fits into the Permitted Development criteria. Your expertise is invaluable, and you've saved clients a lot of money over the years.

As you can imagine, it has been a very hectic couple of weeks, but I have enjoyed the challenge and the achievement. I just hope the planners can cope with the massive increase in submissions they will be receiving at the moment. I can't imagine that the determination dates will be met on time but at least I've done my part now!!

I am grateful to have such lovely clients, and whether the design is small or much larger, I truly enjoy getting to know them during the process and, hopefully, when the work is finished and they're satisfied.

I can’t beat the price rise for new clients, of course, but I can do my part by ensuring that my designs are easy for the planning team to approve whilst still including as many elements of your dream design as possible. So, if you're looking to improve or extend your home, you know who to call.

I don’t know about you, but the lovely weather recently has started me thinking about getting the garden furniture out of storage and dusting it off.

I don't design gardens, I leave that to the expert landscape architects, but I do love to design homes that blur the line between outside and inside, so that you have the benefit of light and space whatever the season. I am often asked to create flexible spaces that work all year round, and an outdoor seating area is often part of the design.

We don't live in a hot, dry country, so the days we can sit out are limited, but there are ways to overcome this with undercover areas which look and feel like they're outside. Covered areas are particularly useful for days when you’ve just settled down outside for a quiet read or a convivial lunch with friends in the glorious sunshine and, lo and behold, the sun disappears and there’s a sudden rain shower. They are also perfect for those who hanker after an outdoor kitchen, or love to barbecue as it extends the opportunities for outdoor dining considerably.

Even if you aren’t an avid cook, imagine how stunning your outdoor area would look in the autumn with carefully chosen plants in pots dotted around, or perhaps a climbing plant or two. Even in winter, there are opportunities for beauty. Imagine lanterns and fairy lights creating a magical wonderland on the other side of the bifold doors, or an outdoor potted Christmas tree, fully decorated, beside those very doors. As you can see from the video, there are a range of options to suit every aesthetic.

If you are hankering after an outdoor space that blends with your internal space, which you can really get the use from, get in touch to find out how I can help make your dream into a reality.

The clients in this house have a young family and wanted an open-plan arrangement in the living areas to allow the children space to play. They were really keen to have a large kitchen that would allow them space to entertain, and needed a more flexible space which would work for them not just now but when the children were older. There is an office area which can double as a homework space in due course. It was important that there was plenty of natural light and this was achieved using huge glass doors which lead onto the garden, allowing them to bring the outside indoors as well as giving them the option to supervise the children in the garden from the comfort of the sofa or from the kitchen.

To achieve this transformation, the existing dining room became the kitchen and a single-storey extension was added to create a living room and dining area. The extension ran around the front and side of the house, and allowed them to add a utility room, downstairs WC, an office and a garage. This extension also meant that the front reception room was larger, allowing them to create a snug within this room, perfect for reading or relaxing with a glass of wine after the children have gone to bed.

These alterations have not only expanded the living space and allowed for a dream kitchen to be installed, but have also added massively to the kerb appeal of this house, making it look more modern than before.

Have you ever wished that you had a bit more light in your home, especially when you build an extension and potentially have to remove a window? At Caswell Design, we’ve got your back. We present to you, Hidden Windows.

This project shows how much light you can gain from adding a hidden window to a potentially dark internal room.

This not only increases the natural light but also allows the shower user to look out at the view to see the morning sunrise. It certainly gives you something more interesting to look at than the toilet or the shampoo dispensers. The window is set in such a way as to ensure that light can come in but nosy neighbours cannot see into the room. A clever way to make this bathroom feel lighter and more attractive.

If you’d like to discuss how you can increase the amount of light in your home, or you are intrigued by the idea of hidden windows, do get in touch with Caswell Design for a chat.

I’m really pleased with the progress on this environmentally friendly home. You can already see how impressive the open plan living/dining and kitchen area will be. With its huge windows and bifold doors leading to the garden this house will be flooded with light, creating a fabulously open living space that perfectly fits this family’s needs.

Upstairs, the master bedroom is flooded with light thanks to the large Velux-style windows in the roof.

All of the rooms have underfloor heating, which is run from an air source heat pump, further enhancing this home’s green credentials whilst also creating a really cosy home. One bonus of underfloor heating is the lack of radiators… no more trying to site your sofa so it doesn’t block the heat from the radiators.

I can’t wait to see this home finished.

I have a file with the title of Dream House, as I'm sure a lot of people do! I add images to this file quite often and always have a sketchbook on hand to sketch up my own ideas, and not just for my own house, either. I never stop thinking about house design, and my inspiration comes from a wide range of sources, including homes I see in the media or those I drive or walk past.

Seeing how others have used space inspires me to be more creative when designing homes for clients and find ways to include as many of the client’s sources and inspirations as possible.

Whether you are looking for a sympathetic extension to an older home, or a stand-out, modern home built from scratch, I always encourage you to send me your ideas so that I can incorporate them into the design. Even if you have quite a few ideas which seem, on the surface, to compete, it is well worth sending them as they all help me to learn what your tastes and requirements are and produce a design that is perfect for you.

It’s perfectly possible to meld traditional and modern styling if that is what you are drawn to and whilst I love modern design, I always work sympathetically with the existing house. If a traditional house needs a sympathetic extension, I would design it with this in mind although sometimes a modern extension works really well so don’t assume that just because your home is more traditional in style that you cannot have a more modern extension.

The images in the video were designed by others but form part of my Dream House file together with a variety of other images from kitchen layouts to the perfect colour for the walls.

If you are considering an extension, I would be very happy to look through your dream home file so that together we can realise that dream for your home.

Access to nature is a great way to lift the spirits. Whether you enjoy a spot of wildlife watching from the comfort of your kitchen, want to keep an eye on the pets as they sniff around, or enjoy looking at your garden throughout the seasons from the comfort of your sofa. Whether you are admiring your garden in full bloom with the doors open and the scent of the honeysuckle wafting into the house, or admiring the beauty of the snow, with the doors very firmly closed, full-length doors really add an extra dimension to a room and make it appear considerably larger; a combination of the extra light and the feeling of space provided by the view of the garden.

These doors have been paired with an underfloor heating system, keeping the whole room cosy during the recent snowfall. And as you can see, the underfloor heating system has definitely gained the canine seal of approval.

If you are looking to gain more space, take advantage of a great view from your home, or increase the amount of light that comes into your living space, get in touch to find out how we can help you to create the home of your dreams.

The Harrogate area has some fabulous stone-built terraced properties, many with original features. They make wonderful family homes. However, there is usually an issue with the Right-to-Light law when an extension could potentially block the natural light to a neighbour's window. The planners also don't like the tunnelling effect or overbearing of just one extension. Working together can alleviate these issues.

Many terrace properties have been beautifully extended at the rear to create fabulous kitchen/dining areas or delightful living rooms, flooded with light. These neighbours were both keen to extend their homes and worked with Caswell Design to help them to create their ideal extension to bring light and space to their much loved family homes. As you can see, the two families had quite different tastes and aesthetics but working together, the families, and Caswell Design, created two different yet harmonious designs. By choosing to harmonise the designs, both families were able to increase the kerb appeal of their respective property whilst not having to compromise on the design, features and details that made both extensions so individual.

If you and your neighbour are considering extending your properties, but have differing views on what that extension should look like, why not have a chat with Caswell Design and see what we can come up with to increase the kerb appeal of both properties. We love to create harmonious yet different designs and make houses into places that their owners are proud to call home.
