As well as offering a full loft conversion service there is the option of a "loft access" package.
Many people store items in their loft and this can cause a few problems as the ceiling joists are only really designed to take the weight of the ceiling structure over a long period of time. Storing items in the loft can lead to the ceilings sagging in the rooms below if not done in the correct manner. Plus of course most people have at some point heard a foot/body part through the ceiling story.
One way to solve this is to correctly floor the structure in the opposite direction of the joists allowing the weight to be supported and spread across the whole ceiling. We counter batten the space with minimum 3x2 timbers to allow enough space to correctly insulate the whole ceiling space because squashed rock wool doesn't work properly, and will push down on the plaster surface below.
We then floor the new structure with 18mm chipboard flooring meaning you could probably throw a dance party up there without causing any problems below.
We put a propper light up there! With a light switch right next to the loft hatch so you never have to stumble around in the dark again.
We add a high quality wooden ladder with a large opening and weighted for easy opening and shutting. This means accessing the loft space is now a 30 second event and completely safe to do.
This job usually takes 1 day and will leave you with a large, easily accessed storage room. An average cost for a 3x3m floor area would be around £500 including materials for floor, ladder, light fitting.
