Fault Finding Done Right – Avoiding a Serious Hazard! ⚡

Got called out recently to investigate a faulty kitchen appliance circuit that had already stumped one electrician and one appliance engineer. Despite their visits, the issue — and more importantly, the danger — had gone unnoticed.

What I found was shocking (literally could’ve been)…

A 30-amp commercial dishwasher had been installed and wired into a 13A fused spur.

The load demand far exceeded what the circuit was designed to handle.

The switch showed clear signs of heat damage, and the connections inside the back box were worrying.

This wasn’t just a one-off — after checking the other two floors, I found the same dangerously incorrect setup repeated.

This is a prime example of how cutting corners or misunderstanding circuit design can lead to serious risks — not just appliance failure, but potential fire hazards and electric shock risks.

✅ I isolated and made safe the faulty installation.
✅ Provided a full report to the client.
✅ Advised on upgrading the circuit to meet proper load requirements, with suitable protection.

If you’re unsure about how something’s been installed — even if someone’s already looked at it — get it checked properly. A fresh pair of trained eyes could be the difference between safety and disaster.
