Foliage and fronds! Although the bright colours of spring bulbs and perennials take centre stage, the emerging foliage of deciduous shrubs, perennials or the fresh new fronds of ferns are almost as enticing to me. They act as a foil for the flowering plants and are a really useful in more shady areas too.

Tulips bring such a vibrant splash of colour in spring. Now I remember why I did all the bulb planting in autumn down on my hands and knees in the cold and wet ground! It’s so worth it for the joy it brings. Along with cherry and crab apple blossom and the lush new foliage of shrubs, perennials coming through, April is a strong contender for my favourite month in the garden. 🌷🌸🌺
