Here’s an interesting one that we squeezed in over Summer!

Some clients fell in love with a magnificent Grade II Listed house that was for sale in Soyland. However, it could only truly work for them as a home, if we could convert an adjacent barn to domestic accommodation, and devise a way of linking the two.

Any extension or alteration to a Listed Building will only be entertained if it might help preserve a building, while also offering benefit to the public.

We established that to link the two buildings would require something almost invisible in design, and would also have to work with existing door openings in the house and barn. Differing floor levels and funny angles would also make things tricky!

We sketched out some ideas for the most minimalistic link extension possible, and engaged with a Council Conservation Officer, who proved to be most accommodating, and was happy to visit the site, and chat about the various ideas.

Sadly, due to other factors, the sale of the house never materialized, and project came to an abrupt halt. However, it was great fun taking on this challenge, while reconnecting with some lovely clients, and also making some new friends along the way.

Who knows, some other punter might fall in love with this house, and give us a call!
