Yesterday we started celebrating Roadways - 60 years in the road construction industry 🧡

And we started in the most Roadways way possible - breakfast rolls grilled by management for our site teams. 🥓

Stories from our founder, Derek Southouse, about how the business began, the characters he met along the way, projects that turned bogs into parks and residential areas, and wrong drives he surfaced accidentally 🥺

Then a panel with employees who have each spent more than 30 years at Roadways, sharing fun stories and reflecting on how the industry has changed over the decades and how much safer it is now.

Our current owners and directors reflected on how the business has evolved and shared our plans for the future.

Roadways has grown from a strong regional SME into a nationally recognised contractor, recycled road aggregate producer, and delivery partner: developing up to 30% lower-cost and put to 70% lower CO2 ways to build roads (including cold bitumen emulsion-based asphalt and HBM/CBGM solutions), winning industry recognition, and delivering at least one social value project every single month across our region!

While we are immensely proud of our history, our current team is absolute magic. The most important part of the story has not changed: it is still about our amazing people who turn up, solve problems, pass knowledge on, and take pride in doing the job properly every single day.

That is what we will be celebrating throughout our 60th year: the people, projects, communities, and practical ideas that have carried Roadways from 1966 to today.

Roadways the Right Way: 60 years of people, progress, and quality highways delivery.

Today, our works van display recorded 44°C.

A few extra minutes in a cool vehicle can be frustrating. But imagine working outside in that heat, wearing long high-visibility trousers, long sleeves, safety boots, gloves and a hard hat carrying out demanding physical work or laying asphalt at temperatures above 160°C all to make our journeys safer and smoother.

A small reuse project, but one that combines circular economy thinking, community support and early exposure to construction in a practical way.

This time Roadways was pleased to donate surplus drainage pipe sections to Annecy School on Sutton Avenue in Seaford, East Suss*x, where they have been reused as play tunnels within the school’s OPAL outdoor play and learning area.

Rather than sending the material away for recycling, it has been given a second life, helping children enjoy imaginative, active play while also introducing them to the shapes, materials and practical thinking used in construction and civil engineering.

The school told us:

“The kids have had the best time with their new tunnel! Thanks so much for the generous donation.”

This is not the first Suss*x school Roadways has supported with materials, practical projects and hands-on learning opportunities. We hope projects like this encourage more children to get outside, build confidence, solve problems and become curious about STEM subjects and the careers that help shape the places where we live.

Schools developing OPAL play areas, STEM gardens or other outdoor learning spaces are welcome to contact us. Where suitable surplus materials are available and our operational commitments allow, we will always consider opportunities to support practical local projects.

Sustainable construction has to work on site:

🔸It has to be safe.
🔸It has to be standards-compliant.
🔸It has to reduce risk.
🔸It has to make commercial sense.
🔸And it has to be repeatable.

Our shortlisted schemes on the National Highways SRN with Cold bitumen emulsion based asphalt shows that 40% - 70% lower-carbon road construction is not just a future ambition, it's becoming business as usual and most importantly it ticks all the wishlist above!

Thank you Highways UK! We are very proud to be shortlisted for the Sustainability Award.

This recognition means a great deal because it reflects the practical progress being made in lower-carbon highways delivery.

Congratulations to all the finalists. We look forward to seeing everyone in Birmingham.

The mini digger had a longer queue than the ice cream van today! 💪🤓

Roadways was delighted to support Hellingly Parish Council’s free Summer Kids Activity Day with one of our supervisors, a 1.5-tonne mini digger and a works van.

Simon spent the day helping children explore the machine, explaining what the controls do and talking with families about careers in construction and civil engineering.

AI may change many professions, but practical careers involving machinery, engineering, problem-solving and teamwork will continue to need skilled people for many years to come.

STEM is not only something children learn in a classroom. Sometimes it starts with sitting in a digger, asking questions and discovering how things work.

Thank you Hellingly Parish Council for organising such a valuable free event for local families.

Roadways the right way - supporting local communities and helping children discover the careers that build their future.
