Meet Bryan. A grandad. A former member of the Armed Forces.

Sometimes Bryan may slow you down for a little while. But he's there, behind the cones, to help make roads better, safer and to keep everyone moving.

Unfortunately, like many roadworkers, Brian has experienced abuse from members of the public.

Being shouted at or treated with aggression when you're simply trying to do your job is upsetting. It leaves people feeling unappreciated.

And yet, Brian isn't asking for much:
A friendly beep, a wave, a smile or someone saying "You're doing a good job. Keep up the good work" can make a real difference to his day.

Next time you pass roadworks, please remember the person behind the cones.

Every journey is someone’s day. The school run. A hospital appointment. A nurse heading to a night shift.

For National Highways ’ Customer (Road User) Service Week, we’re sharing this short video with our Roadways teams and asking:

What might a customer find confusing on our site today?
What would we change if our own family were driving through?

Thinking about the people affected by our work is part of doing the job properly. Clear signs, sensible diversions and taking time to listen can make a real difference.

We’d love our teams to experience that same understanding in return.

That’s the message behind our Behind Every Cone campaign: the people working on the road have families, responsibilities and somewhere to get home to as well.

Please give them space, share a smile or a wave, and say thank you when you can. They’re working to make your journeys safer.

Our co-owner and board member, Viktorija Vasiliauskaite Bailey, has won Women in Highways at the European Women in Construction & Engineering Awards.

The recognition reflects ten years of change at Roadways: investing in our people, putting safety first and delivering durable roads with less waste and lower carbon.

A proud moment for the whole Roadways team. As Viktorija says: “This award is incredibly meaningful because it reflects what has actually been delivered by our people, our teams and our business.”

What does good highways delivery actually look like when you measure more than tonnes laid?

On the A2 for National Highways, Roadways acted as Principal Contractor and self delivery surfacing contractor, delivering a major pavement renewal programme between February and November 2024.

The headline numbers are substantial:

- 25.5 lane-km renewed
- 10,000+ tonnes of asphalt delivered by Roadways teams
- 57 onsite shifts against a 70-shift target
- 4% under target commercially
- 2.6% additional scope absorbed without extending the programme
- 100% ITP compliance and zero defects at completion
- Zero LTI or RIDDOR
- 18% carbon reduction, saving approximately 110 tCO₂e,
- incorporated 24% RAP
- 92% of site waste full recycled to be reused
- Zero public complaints.

But for us, one of the most interesting parts of this scheme was what happened beyond our own surfacing programme.

As a Principal contractor we coordinated up to 12 different contractors per shift, we used shared and extended closures to create productive road space for other essential works at the same time.

That collaboration delivered around 800 additional productive hours for National Highways and helped avoid five future closures of further network disruption.
