Plant maturity affects a landscaping quote more than most homeowners expect, often more than the hardscaping does. Buying established stock instead of young plants gives an instant, finished look on handover day, but it comes at a real cost, and that's usually the biggest single variable between two quotes that otherwise look similar on paper.

Ground condition is the other one that catches people out. Clean soil is straightforward to work with. Compacted or contaminated ground sometimes needs partial or full replacement before any planting can start, and that's not something a quote can price accurately until the ground's actually been seen.

Access matters too, particularly on rear gardens with no side access for machinery. Everything carried in by hand adds real time to a job, and time is cost.

None of these show up as a single line on a quote, which is exactly why two quotes for what looks like the same garden can land so far apart.

Close board with feather edge is the better call for privacy, but it's the wrong answer if the garden takes the wind full on. That's the thing about fencing advice online: most of it treats every garden the same, when the right fence genuinely depends on what the garden's actually up against.

If privacy from neighbours is the priority, solid boards with tight, closed joints block sightlines properly and stay tight as the timber moves. If the garden sits somewhere exposed, slatted or louvre panels let wind pass through instead of loading the whole panel, which is what actually shortens a fence's life, not the timber quality.

One more thing worth checking before any of that. If you're replacing an old fence near a boundary that's ever been disputed, check the deeds first. Rebuilding in the wrong spot can restart a problem that had otherwise gone quiet.

The affected areas were thoroughly cleaned and treated, and a vent was fitted inside the wardrobe to keep air moving and stop the problem coming back. Once that was sorted, the room was finished with fresh paint and new wallpaper, including a soft teal feature wall.

Treating the cause is what actually makes a fresh finish last.

Before work starts, it helps to know where skips and materials will sit and to move anything in the garden worth keeping. "We'll sort it as we go" sounds relaxed, but it's usually how budgets quietly get away from people.

Leaving material decisions until later feels flexible, but it holds up other trades who are waiting on that decision to carry on. And decisions made under pressure on site rarely turn out cheaper, they just get made faster.

The original patio was uneven and had seen better days, with the rest of the garden left undeveloped around it. We laid a full new patio with a circular feature design, edged with loose stone borders and finished with properly with traditional sand and cement pointing.

A price that seems too good usually means something has been left out, guessed at, or quietly added back in later. A quote with no real detail is just as worth questioning,
since if it can't be explained over the phone, it won't be explained on site either.
