Gifford Horticultural Society & show

Gifford Horticultural Society & show Come and join our society. You don't have to live in Gifford to join! We have activities to suit all ages and all levels of gardening experience.

Activities include Talks related to gardening and horticulture, Plant Sales, our annual Outings programme, member’s lunch, and our two-day Flower Show. The show is one of the oldest and largest two-day tented village shows in Scotland, and is not confined to flowers and vegetables; there are also sections for handicrafts, baking, honey and a special section for children. The Society was formed in 1848, to “encourage gardening through competition.” This was expanded, first in 1937 to “encourage horticulture in all its branches” then in 1990 to “advance gardening and horticulture for the public benefit…[and] improve the environmental fabric of the Village and its neighbourhood.”

Now in the 21st century we welcome new members who share our love of plants and gardens, whether edible or just beautiful. You can join the society via a membership form on our website or by attending one of our talks.

Coming soon to a marquee near you!

Sunday's post-Flower Show Concert has a fabulous and varied line-up this year.
- The Gifford Community Choir- all our talented friends sharing an uplifting range of songs
- Megan Mckenzie - a local budding star playing her cello
- Corine Scott - the renowned local singer
- Jonny Gibbs - the guitar genius and very talented artist who designed the front cover of the Flower Show Schedule
Dave Francis and Stuart McCorkindale - a brilliant duo
- John Lamb - Gifford's very own singer/ songwriter
- Lou Johnston and Ray Todhunter - playing excellent jazz standards
The evening will culminate with the Edinburgh-born, world renowned singer/songwriter/storyteller, Mairi Campbell who will perform with Dave Francis on fiddle and guitar.

Concert starts at 7pm in the marquee on the Village Green. Bring a rug or garden chair to sit on, maybe bring a drink or snacks.

The Tweeddale Arms will also be selling sausage rolls and ice cream in the marquee.

Donations in lieu of an entry fee will be given to a Gifford charity.

Not long to go until the tent arrives on the Village Green and it's Flower Show time!
The online entry system is now live on our website (link below). If you enter online, your Staging Cards will be pre-printed ready for you to collect when you come in to stage your entries. This can save loads of time if you have a lot of exhibits to enter, or are entering for the whole family. The deadline to enter online is 18.00 on Wednesday 19th August.
All of the details of all of the classes are in the Schedule which is online too. Paper copies of the Schedule are available at the Lanterne Rouge, Hoggs, Beech and Birch and in the Village Hall.

Good luck with your entries; we are looking forward to seeing everyone in the tent.

Beautiful Scotland Judging

Gifford has entered this year’s Beautiful Scotland competition. Our written submission has been submitted and the physical judging of the village will take place next Wednesday, 5th August, from 2pm.

You will notice a lot of activity from the Amenity Services team at ELC in the run up to the judging, but we also need your help to make Gifford look it’s very best for our judges.

On Tuesday 4th August at 2pm and 6pm we will hold a couple of clean up sessions for litter picking and weeding along the route from the village hall up to the church, along past the Tweeddale to the Bleachfield and then up to the community woods and orchard.

If you could help on the 4th we’d really appreciate you joining one of the sessions. Bring some gloves, brushes, weeding implements, whatever you have. And if you don’t have any, then we’ll provide them. Meet at the Village Hall at either 2pm or 6pm.

🏅 Help us get Gold for Gifford! 🏅
