What a difference a beautifully laid lawn can make to a traditional English country garden!

Just two weeks ago, our team at BZ GARDENS completed the turfing of this lovely garden area, carefully creating a fresh, lush green lawn to complement the property’s established planting and elegant landscape design.

And look at it now! 💚

After only 14 days, the new turf is establishing beautifully, showing a healthy, vibrant green colour and already blending wonderfully into its surroundings.

The combination of neatly shaped topiary, mature trees, ornamental grasses and crisp lawn edges creates a timeless, beautifully balanced country garden.

🌱 A successful lawn starts with proper preparation. Good ground preparation, quality turf, professional installation and appropriate aftercare are all essential for encouraging strong root development and establishing a healthy, long-lasting lawn.

Although the turf is looking fantastic already, it’s still in its early establishment stage, and careful watering and avoiding unnecessary foot traffic remain important over the coming weeks.

🏡 A Beautiful Garden, Now with Added Peace of Mind! 🌿

Another recently completed fencing project by BZ GARDENS LIMITED, combining practicality, safety and traditional garden design.

Our team has installed a new 1.2-metre-high timber picket fence with pointed-top palisades and matching access gates, creating a secure boundary around an existing swimming pool and fountain area.

The main objective was to provide an additional layer of protection for young children and family dogs, helping to prevent unsupervised access to the water features while maintaining the open, welcoming character of this beautiful country garden. 🐾👨‍👩‍👧

Rather than introducing a solid, visually imposing barrier, we opted for a traditional picket fencing design that complements the property’s period architecture, established landscaping and impressive brick pergola.

🌿 A New Private Estate for BZ GARDENS 🌿

We are delighted to have recently taken over the weekly garden and grounds maintenance of this beautiful private country estate.

This is exactly the type of garden we particularly enjoy looking after — a substantial and established landscape where formal horticulture, productive areas and more naturalistic planting all come together.

The grounds contain an impressive variety of individual garden areas, including a formal topiary garden with beautifully structured hedging and pleached trees, extensive lawns, croquet lawn, orchard, kitchen and vegetable garden, herbaceous and ornamental borders, wildflower meadow, swimming pool garden, pond and fountain/water feature.

One of the most rewarding aspects of maintaining an estate of this scale is that every area requires a slightly different horticultural approach. From precise hedge and topiary maintenance to lawn care, pruning, border management, seasonal planting, orchard care and the management of more naturalistic areas, our aim is to maintain the character of each part of the garden while ensuring the estate works beautifully as a whole.

Our team will now be on site every week throughout the year, progressively maintaining and developing the grounds through the changing seasons.

At the end of the day, before leaving one of the beautiful country gardens we maintain, we often record a short walkthrough of the property. It’s not for social media, it’s a visual memo for our team.

The video highlights exactly which pots, planters, hanging baskets and flower beds need priority watering first thing the following morning. Instead of relying on memory or written notes, our colleagues can see precisely what needs attention and where.

It might seem like a small detail, but it’s these small details that help keep gardens healthy, colourful and thriving throughout the hottest periods of the year.

In Part 1 of this time-lapse series, one of our team is trimming the side of a mature beech hedge (Fagus sylvatica). Creating a perfectly straight, even hedge face takes far more than simply running a hedge trimmer along it. It requires skill, experience and meticulous attention to detail.

Beech hedges are among the UK’s most popular boundary hedges, providing beautiful green foliage throughout the growing season before turning rich copper-brown in autumn. Their dense structure offers year-round privacy, shelter and visual appeal.

Our role will encompass the full care and management of the grounds and gardens, maintaining the estate to an exacting standard throughout the year. Transforming boundaries on a country estate 🌿

Before any planting could begin, this project required a full strip-back and reinstatement of the landscape to create the right conditions for long-term success.

The first stage involved clearing out dense, scruffy vegetation that had taken over the boundary line. This not only improved access but allowed us to properly assess and re-establish the original structure of the land.

A key feature of the project was the reconstruction of the boundary ditch. Over time, it had become degraded and ineffective, so we carefully re-formed it to restore both its visual definition and practical drainage function. The excavated material was then used to rebuild and shape the bank above, creating a natural and elevated planting line.

Once the groundwork was complete, we moved on to planting the new hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) hedge along the top of the bank. This species is ideal for estate boundaries offering a classic, formal appearance while being hardy, tolerant, and excellent for year-round screening.

Each plant was set out with precision and planted using high-quality BS-certified shrub and tree compost to give strong establishment conditions from day one. The improved soil structure and nutrient content will support healthy root development and long-term growth.

This is a great example of how proper groundwork and preparation are just as important as the planting itself. A well-installed hedge like this will mature into a robust, elegant boundary feature for years to come.
