❗Intermittent faults are frustrating - this simple step can really help ❗

It’s never good when your boiler, heating or hot water fails, as it’s quite often when you need it most. These faults can be permanent, intermittent or just a one-off.

➡️ Sometimes turning items off and back on, or pressing reset (when there is a reset button) can get your system operational again.

➡️ If the fault is still present then an engineer will be required straight away.

➡️ If the fault goes and the system starts to work again, then an engineer may not be required straight away, but close monitoring would be recommended.

To help engineers diagnose intermittent faults, keep a detailed fault diary that records the time, weather conditions, heating/hot water demand, error codes, and specific circumstances of each occurrence.

Providing this log to a heating engineer supplies essential diagnostic data that can save time.

Don't wait until the cold weather arrives before turning on your heating!

Rather than taking a chance when it's cold to see if your heating system will start up after a long hot summer, give it a test now.

Turn on your heating and run it for 10-15 minutes to ensure all the radiators start to heat up. As the temperature is not cold at the moment, you may need to turn up the room thermostat and/or thermostatic radiator vales.

When mechanical items, especially when in contact with water, have been idle for a while, they can become stuck or seized. Items like pumps, motorised valves and thermostatic radiator valves.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a detailed inspection of your electrical installation to check its condition, identify potential safety issues and highlight any work that may be needed.

📌 For landlords- Electrical installations in rented properties must be inspected and tested at least every 5 years.
📌 For homeowners - A periodic electrical inspection is recommended at least every 10 years.

During an EICR, your electrician will check things such as…
✔ Consumer unit, breakers & RCDs

❗Don't wait until an emergency, such as a water leak, to find your stopcock!

It's a good idea to know where your main stopcock is, before a leak happens, rather than trying to find it for the first time during an emergency.

Another tip is to occasionally check that it shuts off the water, as over time they can become stiff or seize up.

To shut off water - turn the valve firmly clockwise.

If it is stuck, don't use too much force, as this can break or damage the stopcock.

Quite often, stopcocks can be found at low level at the back of kitchen sink cupboards. If it is not under your kitchen sink, check these other typical spots:

• Under the stairs
• In a downstairs toilet or cloakroom
• In a utility or garage
• Near the front door or in the hallway
• In a cellar or basement (if your home has one)
