Take a look at this plate-to-plate heat exchanger we pulled from an overheating Baxi boiler recently. Those black chunks are solid lumps of magnetite (iron sludge) bigger than grains of rice!
When sludge builds up like this, your boiler has to work twice as hard, leading to overheating and a lack of hot water. Fortunately, we quickly diagnosed the issue and managed to get this customer's boiler fixed and running perfectly the very same day.
