Although at Clubb Sand and Gravel Limited we do not operate any Land Quarries, this is something I would really like to reaffirm and promote especially with current weather conditions.
Following the tragic death of a young lad who drowned in a former quarry lake in Ebbsfleet on yesterday (27th May 2026), please remember:
Quarry water kills.
What may look like a harmless place to swim can be extremely dangerous.
⚠️ Quarry lakes can contain:
• Very deep water
• Extremely cold temperatures
• Sudden drops and hidden ledges
• Steep or crumbling sides making escape difficult
• Submerged rocks, machinery and debris
• Weeds and objects that can trap swimmers
• Strong currents or underwater pumps
• Polluted water, dead animals or waste causing disease
• High alkalinity causing rashes and stomach problems
• Poisonous algae
If you fall into cold water:
• Stay calm
• Float on your back for a minute to allow your body to adjust
• Look for a safe place to exit
• Call for help
Please also remember:
• Stay away from quarry edges and quarry faces
• Over 40% of people who drown in the UK never intended to enter the water
• Never swim after drinking alcohol
• Avoid walking alone near water
• Never enter the water to rescue a person or animal — call 999 and use rescue equipment if available
• Always supervise children near water
• Warning signs and fencing are there to protect you
