This one means a lot to finally share.

When I first met my clients, they showed me their vision for this staircase. It wasn’t anything we hadn’t done before, but in terms of scale, it was enormous. There were some unique sections to this staircase too, especially the handrails and caps. These were stained in a new shade called Arundel Oak to bring out this stunning dark look.

Once we had perfected all the details, it was time to get to work. This is where things went slightly awry. We hit a setback with the decorating side of the job, but in a stroke of luck, Paul from was able to help me massively and get all the prep work done. That meant a lot of sanding, taping and priming. Kay from then finished it off with the top coats and touch-ups.

Then I started the cutting and fitting of the 244 metal spindles! Believe me when I say that is a lot of spindles.

The finished product looks amazing. The old varnished staircase now feels completely different. It has a much cleaner, sharper finish, and the space feels brighter, fresher and more open.

This one tested me, but seeing the before and after makes it all feel worth it.

Finished up this oak staircase renovation and it’s one of those projects where the difference is felt as much as it’s seen.

The original flight was solid, but it had the usual signs of age. Turned spindles, tired details, a bit of movement underfoot and that constant squeak that makes the whole hallway feel older than it is.

Rather than ripping the staircase out, we kept the existing structure in place and overclad it in oak. That gave us the clean, warm look of a new staircase while keeping disruption down and making the most of what was already there.

At the bottom we replaced the base bullnose step to soften the entrance and set the tone for the rest of the renovation. From there, the balustrade was rebuilt with full-height oak spindles, running from the underside of the staircase right through to the landing, so the line stays continuous and the whole thing feels purposeful.

The planning is where this one really earned its keep. We had around 2mm to play with to keep everything plumb and true, so it was careful measuring, a full 3D render, and proper prep before a single cut was made. When tolerances are that tight, you do not get a second go.

Everything was finished in a clear satin to protect the oak and keep the grain doing the talking. The result is quieter, firmer underfoot, and it ties in properly with the doors, flooring and skirting.

Working on a home from the 1600s throws up challenges you do not see on modern builds.

This loft access was in a house built with timber salvaged from old ships. The tree that wood came from could have started growing 600 or 700 years ago, then spent time at sea before ending up in this roof.

Because it is a listed building, every change had to be done carefully. A later extension above caused serious headroom problems, and the newer part of the loft sits about 500 mm higher than the original. Before I could even think about the staircase, I had to design a stairwell that worked with the roof bracing and the awkward junction between old and new.

I set the stair in the centre of the roof space to get the best headroom, and added 30 degrees to the turn to create a 120 degree winder. That layout keeps the going consistent across the winders and gives good tread depth where you actually place your feet.

To suit the building, we used oak strings and newel posts, with pine treads and risers.

Old buildings are awkward, but that is what makes them worth working on.

A recent transformation in Stone, Kent. Our clients wanted to modernise their staircase and that was what we did.

This was a straightforward change of handrails, base rails and newel caps.

Then we finished it off with the 10mm toughened glass.
