Roman Concrete supplies ready mixed concrete via drum mixers or volumetric mixers to both commercial and domestic customers throughout North Kent. As a family run business, we take great pride in our reputation, and work hard to ensure that the service and concrete we offer always meets the very highest of standards. The ability to be flexible with the mix design is one of the main benefits of our volumetric mixer trucks, having the ingredients mixed onsite reduces the risk of them setting before you’ve laid the concrete, ensuring you always get a fresh mix. Volumetric concrete offers the advantage of only paying for what you need, as the exact amount will be mixed directly at your site. Why pump mix matters before the truck arrives

Booking a concrete pump for your extension or driveway? The pipe setup matters more than most people think about until the day itself.

Standard line pumps carry 30 linear metres of pipeline, with more available up to 60 metres if you tell us the distance when you book. Get that wrong on the day and you're stuck waiting while we sort more pipe out.

Pump mixes need extra sand and cement compared to a standard mix, simply because the concrete has to travel through that pipework without separating or blocking it. That's a different recipe to, say, a footing mix for groundwork trenches, so it pays to tell us exactly what the pour is for.

One small thing customers often forget: we need a 20kg bag of standard cement dust on site per 20 metres of pipe, to prime the pipework before pumping starts.

Why your concrete mix is only as good as the calibration behind it

Ever wondered why some concrete deliveries end up too wet, too dry, or just inconsistent from one load to the next? It usually comes down to calibration, not luck.

Our onsite volumetric mixers are regularly calibrated, and our ready-mix concrete gets tested weekly in line with BSI terms. That's what keeps every load consistent, whether it's your first delivery or your fiftieth.

Protecting a fresh concrete slab from an overnight frost

Cold snaps in October and November catch a lot of people out, especially when a slab's gone down late in the day and temperatures drop fast after dark.

Fresh concrete needs to cure above freezing for at least the first 24 to 48 hours. If ice crystals form in the mix before it's hardened properly, you get a weak, crumbly surface that never fully recovers.

A few things that actually help:

Cover the slab with insulated blankets or straw as soon as it's finished, not the next morning.
Avoid pouring late in the afternoon when frost is forecast, as the concrete won't have enough daylight hours to gain strength first.
Ask about an air-entrained mix like our PAV 1 or PAV 2 for outdoor paving. The tiny air bubbles give the water room to expand and contract, which protects the surface through freeze-thaw cycles for years to come, not just overnight.

Which concrete delivery is right for your job?

Not sure whether to order a pre-mixed load or go volumetric? It depends on your job, and getting it right saves you money.

Volumetric mixers batch concrete on site, so you only pay for what's actually used. No overs, no unders. The mix can even be adjusted mid-pour if conditions or plans change.

Drum mixers deliver full 8m3 loads, pre-mixed and ready to discharge fast. Great for big commercial jobs where you know your exact quantities.

Not sure which you need? Roman Concrete often combines both: say you need 19m3, we can send two drum mixers for 16m3, then top up the last 3m3 with a volumetric load. Precise, and nothing wasted.

Get your site ready tonight, pour smoothly tomorrow

An early start goes a lot smoother when the groundwork's done the evening before.

Clear the access route. Our drivers need a straight run to the pour point, so shift any parked vehicles or obstructions the night before, not five minutes before we arrive.

Check the mix you've ordered actually suits the job. Footing mixes are built for trenches, ST mixes work well for kerbs, and RC mixes give you the strength and durability for structural work. Getting this wrong on site costs time nobody has at 6am.

Sheet over anything nearby that could catch a splash, cars, fencing, patios. Concrete is dirty work and a bit of prep saves a lot of cleaning after.

Have your PPE ready by the door. Simple, but it's the thing people forget when they're rushing.

Sulphate ground? Get your concrete mix right first

Building on clay, farmland, or near old landfill in North Kent? The sulphates naturally present in some soils can attack ordinary concrete over time, breaking down the cement paste from the inside.

That's why sulphate-resisting cement matters for certain foundations and footings, particularly on agricultural sites and groundworks where the concrete stays in constant contact with wet, sulphate-rich ground.

It's not something to guess at. A site investigation report will tell you the sulphate class of your soil, and that determines the mix design needed to protect the structure for decades, not just years.

Concrete tips for tanks, reservoirs and lagoons

Water retaining structures need a mix that won't crack, bleed, or let moisture through over time. That's not something you want to get wrong on a septic tank or lagoon once it's backfilled.

For jobs like this, a waterproof mix is the right call. It's designed specifically for structures like basements, swimming pools, tanks and reservoirs where water resistance matters more than anything else.

We can also add retarder to the mix if you need more working time before it sets, useful on bigger pours where discharge takes a while, or plasticiser if you need better flexibility and finish before it hardens.

Because we mix on site with our volumetric trucks, we can adjust the mix as conditions change, whether that's weather, access, or a design tweak halfway through the pour. You only pay for what actually goes in, no over-ordering, no waste sat in a drum.

Structural vs non-structural concrete, explained simply

Ordering the wrong mix for the job is an easy mistake to make if nobody's explained the difference.

Non-structural concrete (like our C15/Gen 2) is for jobs with no embedded metal, think house floors without a permanent finish, floor blinding, drainage works, or trench fill. It's rated at 10 Newton/28 day strength, built for support rather than load-bearing duty.

Structural concrete is a different animal. Our C40 mix hits 40 Newton/28 day strength and is what you need for footings, foundations, structural beams, septic tank bases, or paving an HGV yard. If steel reinforcement is going in, or the slab needs to carry serious weight, this is the grade to ask for.

Get it wrong and you're either overpaying for strength you didn't need, or underbuilding something that has to last decades.

Concrete strength: matching the mix to the job matters

Not every job needs the same concrete, and getting it wrong can cost you later.

For water-facing or high-exposure work like drainage, blinding and groundworks near water, C25/ST2 is a solid choice, it's built for foundations, trench fill and drainage applications in non-aggressive ground.

For anything taking heavier structural loads, C40 steps things up to 40 Newton strength, commonly used for septic tank foundations, HGV park paving and structural support beams.

Need extra crack resistance in exposed conditions? Concrete fibres reduce cracking and boost water resistance while still settling to a clean finish, and waterproof additives are also available for basements or anything needing that extra defence against moisture.

We can also do multi-drop deliveries with different mix designs from the same load, so you only pay for what you use.
