Forestry Harvester Operators (Self-Employed)

Simpson Arboriculture Ltd is looking for an experienced Forestry Harvester Operator to become the main operator of our John Deere 1270G Harvester with Log Max harvesting head.

This is a key role within our mechanised forestry team, operating on a wide range of commercial forestry and woodland management projects. We are looking for an operator who takes pride in producing high-quality work, looking after their machine and working safely and efficiently.

As a family-run business, we work on a diverse range of forestry sites throughout Lincolnshire and across the UK. The successful applicant must be willing to travel and work further afield when required.

We're looking for someone who:

Has proven experience operating forestry harvesters.
Holds the relevant NPTC FMO qualifications.
Has experience working across a variety of forestry sites and conditions.
Has good communication skills and works well as part of a team.
Takes pride in maintaining machinery and carrying out daily inspections.
Is willing to travel and work away from Lincolnshire when required.

What we offer:

Competitive day rate, dependent on experience.
Regular work for the right candidate.
Modern, well-maintained machinery.
Opportunities to develop and operate other specialist forestry equipment.
The chance to join a respected, family-run business with an excellent reputation in the forestry and arboriculture industry.

Working at our nearby National Trust property Belton House. Our team were out removing deadwood on this acacia tree, helping to keep it safe and healthy for visitors to enjoy.

With the stunning orangery on one side and the House on the other, it was a pretty special view from the canopy for Billy today! 💚 🌿🏛️

We're incredibly lucky to work at such an iconic property and always take great pride in helping care for these historic trees and landscapes.

It's jobs like these that remind us why we love what we do.

Will’s ‘concentration face’ is in full effect! 😅

No wonder really... running the JENZ wood chipper is a constant balancing act. While feeding the timber, he’s also keeping an eye on multiple screens, buttons, k***s and levers to keep the chipping running smoothly.

The chipper is powered by the PTO on our Valtra tractor, so if a particularly tough piece of timber goes through, there’s a risk of stalling. To prevent that, Will can adjust the machine’s settings and even reverse the infeed to keep everything flowing and protect both the PTO and tractor engine.

All of this woodchip is being blown straight into our storage shed, ready to be delivered to our biomass customers.

Job done... and we’ve got a bit more space back in the yard too! 🌲🚜

🌳 Dismantling of two mature elm trees

Our team recently carried out the careful removal of two mature elm trees that had sadly declined and died over the past few years. Having stood for generations in this small village, they will be greatly missed by the local community.

With an old churchyard beneath the canopy, historic gravestones, overhead power lines and a wire fence surrounding the site, this was a job that required detailed planning and a controlled approach.

Using a mobile crane, positioned in a neighbouring field kindly made available by a local landowner, we safely lifted each section away while protecting the surrounding features.

♻️ We always aim to make the best use of every tree:

The brash was chipped for biomass.
The timber was retained in long lengths for milling and a second life as usable timber.
We were pleased to leave the neighbours a slice of elm as a keepsake of these much-loved trees.

A huge thank you to the neighbouring landowner for allowing us to use their field, helping us complete the work safely and efficiently.

Every tree has a story, and while it’s never easy to remove trees with so much local history, we’re proud to carry out this work with care, respect and professionalism.

Biscuits always go down well 🍪

The team were provided with a whole tray of biscuits when reducing overhanging branches on this ash tree, to improve clearance over the customer's driveway.

It's always appreciated when customers look after the team, especially on a busy day. Thanks for the treats – they certainly didn't last long! 😄

Another load safety unloaded in the yard. 🪵🪾

A lot of work goes into getting timber from the forest floor to its end use, from harvesting and forwarding through to haulage and processing.

Seeing the stacks build up in the yard is always the rewarding part of the process. What a team effort! 💪🏻

Exciting news here at SimpArb, replacing our John Deere with a new to us Komatsu 875. Keeping kit updated and hopefully keeping downtime to a minimum.

In at the deepend at this site for our operator with some fairly steep slippy slopes, easily coping with the terrain
