Staunton. Chartist bungalow, c.1847 — lean-to re-slated.

Shallow pitch, so easy-slate between every slate.
Old natural slate off, new Spanish A1 T1 S1 on.
Counter-battened for airflow between felt and insulation.
Lead detail at the change of pitch. New welded front apron. Gutter raised.

Small roof. No shortcuts.

Shallow pitch, big problem — sorted.

This roof was laid in cement fibre slates at just 13°, and it had been fighting a losing battle: water tracking back under the slates and condensation trapped behind them with nowhere to go.

Full strip and reroof using an easy-slate system rated for the low pitch, on a non-breathable membrane. Ventilation was the other half of the fix — over-fascia vents at the eaves and hand-made lead slate vents higher up, so air can move through and wick the moisture away instead of sitting there rotting the timbers.

Right system, right pitch, right airflow. No more leaks, no more damp.

Three plumbers, signing their work into the sheet before they dressed it down. One of them stood on that roof 168 years ago. The lead and the Welsh slate are still doing their job today.

That’s the thing about traditional materials laid properly — they outlive everybody who touched them. It’s why we still work the old way on heritage and period roofs: natural slate, Cotswold stone, handmade clay tiles and lead to LSA specification.

Old felt stripped, rotten fascias out, porch cut away. New firring strips to kill the standing water, OSB3 deck, rubber roof with trims, new dormer roof, wooden fascia with UPVC over-capping, new gutters and abutment vents.

Watertight and ready for the next phase — new tiled roof coming soon 👊

Heritage chimney restoration on a Grade II listed cottage dating back to the 1600s.

The stack was in poor condition — repointed with hard cement in the 80s, which traps moisture and slowly destroys soft handmade brick. We stripped it back and rebuilt it the right way: reclaimed handmade bricks, a reclaimed terracotta pot, and a full lime mortar repoint, with a top and bottom vent so the chimney can breathe again.

We also took out the old log burner and flue liner and fitted an ECOSY+ Pure Bio stove.

The chimney now breathes as it should — and no longer leaks.

Before and after on this week’s flat roof.

The old covering on this commercial office block had reached the end of its life — weathered, flaking and starting to let water in. Rather than strip it all off, we overlaid it with a fibreglass-reinforced polyurethane system: a tough resin base, glass matting bedded in for strength, then a seamless, joint-free topcoat over the lot. No felt laps to fail, no seams to lift — a fully bonded roof that flexes with the building and should keep the weather out for decades.

It’s the latest piece of work we’ve carried out on this roof over the last few years. We’ve also rebuilt the box gutter running through the slate roof, re-roofed the slate pitches above it with traditional lead mopstick ridge details, and laid the two other GRP flat roofs that the box gutter discharges into. Old slate, lead and modern liquid systems all working together to keep one awkward roof watertight.

Roof renovation complete at Bangkok Canteen on Westgate Street, in the heart of historic Gloucester. 🏠

New Marley Hawkins clay tiles in Fired Sienna, all box gutters fibreglassed, lime mortar throughout, and the front chimney repointed and made safe — all in keeping with this beautiful old building.

A bit different from a roof — a GRP feature pond restoration in Cheltenham 💧

The original lining had seen better days, so we sanded it right back, laid a fresh double layer of 450gsm matt, and finished with a black GRP topcoat. Glass-smooth, fully watertight, and ready for the water to go back in.

There aren’t many offices with a view like this 😄
The team hard at work on a full re-roof in the heart of Gloucester city centre — Westgate Street, with the Cathedral keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Clay plain tiles stripped, new underlay and battens going down, and a Velux window being installed — all accessed via scaffold in a busy city centre location. Not the easiest job, but that’s what we’re here for.

We’re also in the middle of a full website update — new look, faster, and mobile friendly. Watch this space!
