Rats are looking for harbourage — and the current heatwave could be pushing them closer to your property.

During hot, dry weather, rats and rodents can move out of their usual surrounding areas in search of cooler shelter, food, water and safe nesting sites.

This means we can see increased activity around:

Homes
Lofts and wall cavities
Garages and sheds
Commercial kitchens
Bin stores
Warehouses
Farms and outbuildings
Food premises and hospitality sites

Once rats find suitable harbourage within a house or commercial property, the problem can quickly develop. They can cause damage to insulation, wiring, stock, stored goods and building fabric, as well as creating serious hygiene and contamination risks.

At Forest of Dean Pest Control, we deal with rat and rodent issues across the Forest of Dean, including Bream, Coleford, Cinderford, Drybrook and all surrounding forest areas.

We also cover Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Chepstow and parts of Wales.

If you are hearing noises in the loft, seeing droppings, noticing gnaw marks, finding holes around your property, or seeing rats around bins, gardens or business premises, don’t leave it to get worse.

🐾 Fun Fact Friday from Forest of Dean Pest Control 🐾

It started like any normal morning in the office… kettle on, phones ringing, paperwork stacked neatly… until Ticket the office dog decided he had detected “something suspicious” under the desk.

Now, Ticket is very experienced in pest detection. In his professional opinion, anything that moves, crunches, or exists within snack-range is highly suspect. So naturally, he went full detective mode—ears up, nose down, tail doing that serious “I am working” wag.

Cue the dramatic moment: the “pest” in question turned out to be… a rogue biscuit that had rolled under the cabinet two days earlier. No rodents. No insects. Just crumbs. Cold, hardened, slightly questionable crumbs.

Ticket was not impressed. He sat beside it for a full five minutes, staring at it like it had personally betrayed the pest control profession.

Which brings us neatly to today’s Fun Fact:

🧠 Did you know rats can squeeze through gaps as small as 15mm due to their flexible skeletons and collapsible rib cages? That’s about the width of a £1 coin.
Which, thankfully, is still smaller than Ticket’s dignity after the biscuit incident.

At Forest of Dean Pest Control, we deal with the real infestations—rats, mice, wasps, and all the usual suspects—so your pets (and office dogs with overactive imaginations) don’t have to.

If you’ve got a “mystery noise”, a “suspicious rustle”, or just want peace of mind, give Jess a ring in the office and we’ll sort it properly.

📞 Jess is ready to help get you booked in.

And Ticket? He’s currently on lunch break… guarding the biscuit cupboard like it’s a high-security site.

Small Wasp Nest Today… Big Problem Tomorrow

At this time of year, many wasp nests across the Forest of Dean start off no bigger than a golf ball — but don’t let that fool you.

A single queen can rapidly build a colony containing hundreds, sometimes thousands, of wasps as summer progresses.

What seems like a minor issue now can quickly become a major problem around:
• Homes
• Gardens
• Loft spaces
• Commercial properties
• Outdoor seating areas

Early treatment is always safer, easier, and more effective.

🐾🦟 Fun Fact Friday — Ticket vs The Fleas 🦟🐾

This week’s office debate at Forest of Dean Pest Control has been between Ticket the office dog… and fleas.

Spoiler alert: Ticket is NOT a fan.

Did you know the common cat flea (*Ctenocephalides felis*) is actually the most common flea found on both cats AND dogs in the UK?

Even worse…
Adult fleas can jump around 150 times their own body length. Which, if humans could do the same, would mean jumping over a double-decker bus.

No wonder Ticket keeps checking his bed like it’s a crime scene. 👀

The real problem with fleas is that by the time you spot a few adults, there are often eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden throughout carpets, furniture, cracks, and pet bedding.

That’s why professional treatment is often needed to fully break the flea life cycle properly.

🐾 Ticket’s official advice:
“Stop scratching and call the professionals.”

Pest Prevention Tip of the Week
Rats and mice don’t need large gaps to enter a property. Even small openings around pipes, air bricks, or doors can be enough for access.

Early prevention is always cheaper than treatment.

Recent media coverage surrounding a suspected hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise vessel has understandably raised public concern. The National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) would like to provide some clear and balanced information for UK households and businesses.

The reports currently relate to a suspected South American strain of hantavirus associated with wild rodents native to parts of South America. These strains are different from those occasionally identified within the United Kingdom and are linked to rodent species that are not present in the UK.

In Britain, the rodents most commonly encountered in and around properties are the Brown Rat and the House Mouse. While rodents can carry a range of diseases and should never be ignored, the severe forms of hantavirus currently being discussed in international news reports are not established within the UK rodent population.

The UK has robust public health monitoring systems in place and there is currently no indication of a wider public health threat within the United Kingdom linked to these reports.

It is important, however, not to become complacent regarding rodent activity in homes, workplaces, food premises, farms and public buildings. Rodents are capable of contaminating food, damaging property through gnawing and nesting behaviour, and spreading other illnesses through their urine, droppings and parasites.

Good hygiene, proofing, waste management and prompt professional pest control remain the most effective ways to reduce rodent risks.

The NPTA would always advise the public to avoid direct contact with rodent droppings or nesting materials. Areas affected by rodent activity should be cleaned carefully and safely, avoiding dry sweeping which can disturb contaminated dust particles.

If signs of rodent activity are identified, professional advice should be sought promptly from a qualified pest management company.

The National Pest Technicians Association will continue to monitor official guidance and developments, but at present there is no reason for alarm within the UK.

For further information on professional pest management and finding a qualified pest controller, visit the NPTA website.
