As much as we love getting our teeth into a 1,000 panel installation, it's nice to get a wee chilled off-grid job in our own home town.

Don't be fooled by the lack of panels — these are 645W modules, the sort we normally use on commercial ground-mounted arrays.

This one only needs to run the odd socket and some lighting, but it still produces around 3,000 kWh a year. Just solar and a small battery. Completed in a single day for Fife Historic Buildings Trust.

We reckon we can take the trophy now for diversification of clean power: ice cream vans, pizza vans, water treatment plants, hydro schemes and braw greenhouses to name a few.

No more weekly battery swaps.

At a water treatment site in Fife, they sample ash lagoons before anything is discharged to the river. Keeping that sampler running meant an operative drove out every week to swap a 12V battery.

We've now put in a fully off-grid system: 6 × Aiko 665W panels on a purpose-built ground frame, a Sigenergy 3.68kW inverter and 30kWh of SigenStor storage, with a generator on standby for the depths of winter. Solar alone covers around 80% of the duty cycle.

One less job on someone's weekly round — and a monitoring station that looks after itself.
