We always like to share positivity and shelter you from sad truths but please try to guess how many swarms of honeybees have gone either under the eaves of a property, behind fascia or disappeared down a chimney, just since yesterday? Four. We had three reported yesterday, in Boness, Kinross, Glenrothes and one was reported this morning, in Leven. Imagine how many we haven't heard about?
When bees enter a property, we can't do anything about it. Bees can't be removed alive without erecting scaffolding and carrying out excavation work, costing ££££££'s. Even then it often does end well, for the bees involved.
Throughout every year, we write post after post, urging people to contact a beekeeper and report a swarm in a cluster straight away. Every year we read comment after comment, where 'Facebook experts (on everything)' respond to swarm posts and wrongly advise people to ignore the swarm because "they will move on". It's often when the bees do move on and go under the eaves of their property or their neighbours, people get in touch.
This is where we need to ask, you, reading this, how can we reach people? A lot of people have zero interest in nature. We share posts in community groups but people with no interest don't read posts about bees. How can we change things, so that everyone knows a swarm should never be ignored? Year after year bees are lost. What can we do?
