We recently serviced this Vaillant R290 (propane) air source heat pump installed in a shared underground car park. The location immediately raised concerns for our engineer.
Propane is heavier than air, so in the event of a refrigerant leak, it can collect at low level rather than dispersing naturally.
During the service, we also found oil, soot and grime throughout the unit. Heat pumps are designed to draw in clean, fresh air, but in this environment theyโre continually pulling in contaminants from the car park.
At SwitchHeat, we believe renewable heating should be designed and installed correctly, not just installed.
A heat pump is only as good as the design and installation behind it.
