Twenty-two years as Block’s sole director. So why has Kenneth changed things now?

Following our recent announcements of the appointment of John Burns and Oliver Shields as new directors, Kenneth Martin has taken some time to share his own thoughts on why now felt like the right moment to strengthen Block’s leadership team.

And as Kenny makes clear in his latest blog, "this isn’t about stepping away".

After 22 years of building and leading Block, it is about starting to share more of the responsibility - with two people he already knows, trusts and has worked alongside for many years.

For Kenny, that familiarity matters, but so do the different strengths John and Ollie bring. Kenny talks about why he wanted people around the table who would bring their own perspective, challenge things and take real ownership of the parts of the business they know well.

As he puts it, "he doesn’t need two more versions of himself."

He wanted people who bring their own experience, challenge things and can take real ownership of the parts of the business they know well.

And just to be clear - Kenny isn’t going anywhere!

He remains very much involved in the day to day running of Block, helping our clients and managing projects. The difference is that he now has John and Ollie alongside him, sharing more of the responsibility for where the practice goes next.

After 22 years as sole director, its a significant change for Kenny and for Block.

A lot of tendering is driven by cost, not value - and for a long time, it’s created a race to the bottom.

In this clip from last weeks Hard Hat Talks, MJ O’Shaughnessy explains why “cheap fees” often lead to under-delivery… and why projects can disappear, then come back 18 months later because the service wasn’t provided properly.

Construction businesses want to deliver - but they also have to sustain themselves. That’s the trap: chasing turnover instead of realistic delivery.

New Directors. Familiar Faces.

Earlier this week, we shared the news that John Burns and Oliver Shields had joined Kenneth Martin as Directors of Block Architects.

For many people who already know Block, John and Ollie will be familiar to you.

They have both been part of the business for some time, and both already play an important role in the way we work with clients and deliver projects.

What is different now is the level of responsibility they carry within the practice.

And while they bring very different strengths and perspectives to Block, that is exactly what makes the new Block leadership team work.

So whether you already know John and Ollie well, or have only come across them through Block, we thought this was a good opportunity to share a little more about them in our latest blog in the link below.

After 22 years with one director, Block Architects now has three.

After many years of working within Block, John Burns and Oliver Shields have joined Kenneth Martin as Directors of the practice, strengthening the leadership team as the business moves into its next stage of development.

John becomes Director & Head of Sustainable Design, while Oliver takes on the role of Director & Head of Interior Design.

Both appointments have come from within the existing team, recognising the contribution John and Oliver already make across our projects, clients and wider business.

For clients, the important thing is continuity.

The people you work with are not changing. What changes is that there is now a broader leadership team around them, with greater responsibility shared across different areas of the practice.

Kenneth remains fully involved as Founder & Director, working alongside John and Oliver across Block’s projects, clients and future direction.

It is an important step for the business, but one built around people who already know Block, our clients and the way we work.

In construction and development, it’s not just about “selling what you can do”.

As MJ O’Shaughnessy explains in the recent Hard Hat Talks podcast, the real difference is relationships, trust, and honesty - being able to pick up the phone and say: “This isn’t going to work - we need to change tack.”

He’s seen planning applications fail, and then watched new teams come in to rescue them. The common thread? Trust and a well-oiled team.

Most people focus on what they can see - the building, the design, the programme.

But as MJ O’Shaughnessy explains, where you lose money on projects is often in the ground - and that’s why getting engineers involved early doors (with the architect and full design team) can save serious time, cost, and pain later.

Construction project can look viable right up until one technical issue changes the cost, programme or scope.

That is exactly what today's new episode of The Hard Hat Talks discusses: 'The Hidden Risks Beneath Construction Projects'.

In this latest episode, Kenneth Martin is joined by MJ O’Shaughnessy from Will Rudd Consultancy for a wide-ranging conversation about the engineering issues that can have a much bigger impact on a project than clients sometimes expect.

Ground conditions. Drainage. Flood risk. Site investigation. Planning. Funding. Procurement.

None of these sit in isolation, and when one starts to move, it can quickly affect the wider project.

MJ shares his perspective on when engineers should be brought into the conversation, how technical information can influence development potential, and why getting the right advice at the right stage can give clients more options before decisions become difficult or expensive to change.

But there is a lot more in the conversation too.

They get into conservation engineering, historic buildings, the Mackintosh Building, consultant fees, procurement, communication, relationships and whether professional advice is sometimes being pushed too far towards the lowest possible cost.

It made for a really interesting conversation, with plenty in it for developers, clients, consultants and anyone involved in getting projects from idea to delivery.

Coming tomorrow on The Hard Hat Talks: The Hidden Risks Beneath Construction Projects

A site can stack up on paper. The location works. The brief makes sense. The numbers look right.

But once the technical work starts...sometimes, the picture can quickly change, affecting delivery, cost and time.

And when hidden risks surface late, the impact can be significant.

In our next episode, Kenneth Martin is joined by MJ O’Shaughnessy from Will Rudd Consultancy for a practical conversation about engineering, project viability and the role early technical input can play in shaping whether a project remains deliverable.

They discuss when engineers should become involved, how technical constraints can influence development potential, and why getting the right advice early can give clients and project teams more options before decisions become difficult or expensive to change.

The conversation also moves into conservation engineering, historic buildings, consultant fees, communication and whether the drive towards lower fees can sometimes come at the expense of value.

Plenty to get into with this one.

The full episode launches tomorrow.

The Scottish Construction Summit is now less than a month away - and Hard Hat Talks will be part of the day.

On 22 October, Hard Hat Talks is due to broadcast live from the Summit as people from across Scottish construction come together to discuss some of the issues affecting the industry's ability to deliver.

Funding, planning, procurement, collaboration, skills and communication are all part of that wider conversation - and many of those subjects have already come up across Hard Hat Talks, including the Summit-focused episode released earlier this month.

The Summit is an opportunity to bring those conversations together and look at what needs to change in practice, with the Future Talent Hub also putting a focus on how the industry develops the people it will need next.

Block Architects and Hard Hat Talks are looking forward to being there on 22 October.

Tickets for the Summit are FREE, so if you're planning to attend, you can register below.

Thinking about your first housing development, but not sure where to start? We can help.

You may have found a site or building. You might have an idea of what you would like to develop. But knowing how to turn that into a real housing project can be the difficult part.

You don’t need to understand the whole development process before speaking to us.

Block can help you test the initial idea, look at what the site may realistically support, understand the planning position and start shaping a clearer brief and route through the project.

We can also help you understand what information, approvals and other professional input are likely to be needed as the project develops.

So if you’re considering your first housing development and don’t quite know where to begin, speak to the Block team.

And if you’re still doing some early research before you’re ready for a conversation, Archie on the Block website can help point you towards useful information and the right place to start.
