This week we walked away from a job.

Not because we couldn’t do it.

Not because we didn’t want the work.

Because we didn’t believe it was the right solution.

This property had ongoing localised mould issues in a rented flat.

The landlord requested a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system, so we carried out a survey before quoting.

Our findings suggested that whilst a PIV may improve the property’s overall ventilation, we couldn’t honestly say it would resolve the localised issue we had found (potential cold bridge/water accumulating above the DPC of an external wall).

We said exactly that, the landlord still wanted the installation, the tenant wanted the underlying problem fixed. We found ourselves in the middle and we made a decision.

Rather than install something we weren’t convinced addressed the root cause, we declined the work.

Not exactly the most profitable decision. But our reputation isn’t built on saying “yes” to every job.

It’s built on giving honest advice, even when that advice means walking away.

If we think something will work, we’ll tell you. If we think it probably won’t, we’ll tell you that as well.

Sometimes honesty costs us a day’s work, but you can’t put a price on being able to sleep at night.

We’re okay with that!!

We’ve been a wee bit slow with communication the last week, Tanya’s been on, a very well deserved, holiday. And we’ve been up to our eyes in school holidays.

On top of this, we’re in the process of changing over to new laptops and software.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently….

One of my absolute favourite things about running a business has never been the electrical work itself. It’s the people.

It’s crazy to think We’ve been doing this for the best part of 7 or 8 years now. Although we work all over Central Scotland these days, the majority of that journey has been spent in and around East Kilbride, and it’s incredible how quickly time passes.

I’ll go back to a customer’s house a few years later and the little kid who was following me around asking questions is suddenly taller than me. Customers I first met while they were still working are now retired and enjoying life. You really do get a front row seat to people’s lives, even if it’s only in small moments.

People are sometimes surprised that I remember them, or that I remember it was their mum, dad, neighbour or friend who recommended them years ago. The truth is, I do remember. I remember every customer we’ve worked for, the conversations we’ve had and the people behind the front door!

That’s one of the things I love most about running a local business. It’s never just about turning up, doing a job and leaving. Over the years you build genuine relationships. Some customers have become people I’d happily call friends.

It always means a lot when someone asks how I’m getting on, how business is, or how the kids are getting on. It probably seems like such a small thing, but it genuinely isn’t. Those conversations remind me that this has always been about more than electrical work.

When I started all those years ago, I just wanted to build a business that people could trust. I never imagined I’d meet so many genuinely kind, funny and supportive people along the way.

So, if we’ve ever worked for you, thank you. Whether it was a small repair, a rewire, an EV charger or anything in between, you’ve been part of the journey, and I genuinely appreciate every bit of support you’ve given us over the years.

I really do feel incredibly lucky to do what I do!

Thinking of buying one of those fan lights you’ve seen on social media recently? Read this first…

With the current heatwave across the UK, we’ve noticed a huge increase in adverts for screw in fan lights that fit into an existing light fitting.

Many of these are supplied with a bayonet (BC) to Edison screw (ES) adapter like the one pictured.

🚩 We do not recommend using these in UK homes. 🚩

There are two important reasons why…

1️⃣ They’re not designed for the weight or movement

A standard UK ceiling pendant set is designed to support the weight of a lamp and shade, not a motorised fan with rotating blades.

The constant vibration and movement can put additional stress on the lampholder and flexible cord, potentially leading to damage, loose connections or even the fitting failing over time.

2️⃣ The adapter creates a potential safety issue

A UK bayonet cap (BC) fitting isn’t polarity sensitive. It can be inserted either way round, so the adapter has no way of knowing which contact is live and which is neutral.

An Edison screw (ES) fitting is polarity sensitive. The threaded outer metal shell should be connected to neutral, with only the centre contact being live.

Because the adapter can’t guarantee the correct polarity, there’s a possibility the threaded metal shell of the adapter could become live, increasing the risk of electric shock when fitting or removing the fan.

⚡ Just because a product is widely advertised doesn’t automatically mean it’s suitable for use in UK electrical installations.

If you want to keep cool this summer, we’d recommend either:

✅ A conventional plug in desk fan, or

✅ Having a proper ceiling fan professionally installed. These are designed to be securely fixed to the structure of the building and connected to a suitable electrical supply.

Don’t let a cheap online gadget turn into an expensive or dangerous mistake.

We’ve had a few calls recently from customers reporting that their storage heaters have stopped working, only to find that the issue is related to the RTS switch off rather than a fault with the heaters themselves.

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is being phased out across the UK, and many older electricity meters that control storage heaters and off peak tariffs are being affected.

If your storage heaters have suddenly stopped charging overnight, your hot water isn’t heating when it should, or you’re still using an older style meter, the first call should be to your energy supplier, not an electrician.

Your supplier may need to replace or reconfigure your meter before your heating system will operate correctly again.

Unfortunately, there are electricians out there who will happily charge a call out fee to investigate this, only to tell you what your energy provider could have told you over the phone.

Well, it finally happened. The message every small business dreads…

“I’m not paying you.”

Today I spent 7 hours running a cable from the front to the rear of a house in East Kilbride for an EV charger. It was a particularly tricky cable run through the property, through the house, out the back and all the way down the garden to the charger location on the fence.

Add in today’s heat and honestly it felt about 10 times harder than normal.

Finally got everything finished, tested, commissioned and handed over around 7pm. Sent over the paperwork and invoice…

Almost immediately got a reply saying:

“You’re not getting paid for the work today.”

Apparently we’re “married” and it’s “our house” 🤦‍♂️

Toughest customer I’ve ever had.

As we head into the holiday weekend, we are also approaching the end of our first quarter as Leaf! We just wanted to take a moment to say a genuine thank you to all of our customers for the incredible support you’ve shown us during the restructure.

If we’re honest, we fully expected a bit of a slowdown while we found our feet as a new business. Instead, we’ve experienced the complete opposite. The amount of support, enquiries, recommendations and interest in what we’re building has honestly blown us away. So many people have gone out of their way to ask about the new company, follow the journey and support us from day one, and that really hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s lovely to see people so invested in our success and supporting a small local business.

One of the biggest reasons behind starting Leaf Electrical was the opportunity to build something sustainable from the ground up using everything we learned over the 7 years of running LawMac. We wanted to create a business with better systems, better communication, better organisation and ultimately a better experience for our customers and it’s becoming more and more apparent every week that those systems are working. Not just for us internally, but in the quality of service and experience our customers are receiving too.

A huge thank you also goes to Fayona and Tanya behind the scenes. The amount of work that goes into keeping everything running smoothly often goes unseen, but Leaf simply wouldn’t function the way it does without them.

We genuinely appreciate every single person who has trusted and supported us so far.

We hope you all have a brilliant holiday weekend and enjoy the sunshine if we’re lucky enough to actually get some!
