Peat probing is an important step for assessing the suitability of soil in upland or boggy lowland areas for renewable energy projects. Many wind farms, for example, are constructed on hills not suitable for intensive farming, often covered in blanket bog or layers of peat.

Peat probing and coring is necessary to measure the depth and characteristics of the peat layers and determine the likely impacts on subsurface stability and hydrology. Not only can this information help inform foundation design plans, but it also helps minimise environmental impacts to potentially sensitive peatlands during construction and operation phases.

In addition, as peat can be a sink or source of carbon depending on its condition, information on the water table and the depth and distribution of peat across the site can help assess the potential carbon losses or gains associated with the development which can then be added to calculated carbon savings from the project. It can also be added to ecological data to inform peatland restoration and management plans – which is really important given 80% of the UK’s peatlands are in a degraded state and currently emitting CO2.

If you would like some more information on ERS’ peat probing services for your next renewable energy project, get in touch.

ERS is qualified to work on National Grid sites and our GI site staff have undertaken specialist training required to work in high-hazard environments with live, overhead high-voltage power lines.

Many BESS sites and substations we do ground investigations for are located near existing electrical grid infrastructure, such as former power stations.

If you have a similar high-hazard energy site needing a ground investigation carrying out and would like to speak to a qualified contractor, get in touch.

Contaminated land and other brownfield sites not suitable for housing are often still viable for renewable energy developments.

However, often the ground investigation and preparatory works required for such sites throw up additional challenges. As a specialist contaminated and site investigation and remediation contractor, ERS has a lot of experience working on these sites for our renewable energy clients and their consultants.

At one such site earmarked for a Battery Storage System, ERS managed the excavation and disposal of contaminated stockpiles on the site. By using our on-site pXRF equipment for real-time heavy metals analysis, we were able to delineate the stockpile and reduce the amount of hazardous material requiring disposal to landfill, saving our client money and reducing the project’s environmental impact and carbon footprint.

If you would like to know more about ERS’ waste management services and how we can save you money on your next renewable energy project, get in touch today.

Any land owners/managers in the Perth & Kinross Council area got some invasive plants they want to tackle as part of restoring your land? You may qualify for funding towards it 👇

🌿 The Nature Restoration Fund is now open for applications

We're pleased to announce that the Nature Restoration Fund is now open for 2026/27, supporting projects that restore nature and improve biodiversity across Perth and Kinross.

Since 2021, the fund has supported more than 80 Council, community and landowner-led projects across the region.

This year, funding is available through three grant schemes: Tree Planting Grant, Woodland Restoration Grant and Wider Nature Restoration Grant.

The fund is open to individuals, private landowners, farmers and estates, community groups, charities, local organisations and partnerships delivering projects in Perth and Kinross.

Applications for the Woodland Restoration Grant and Wider Nature Restoration Grant close on 14 September 2026. The Tree Planting Grant remains open until January 2027, or until available funding has been allocated.

🚛 Calling all HGV drivers. This one's worth five minutes of your time. 🚛

Loughborough University is doing a big piece of research for the Department for Transport, looking at how Vulnerable Road User detection systems perform out on the road day to day. Cameras, sensors, alerts, all the kit that's meant to spot cyclists and pedestrians before you do.

Here's the thing though. They dinnae want to hear from the folk who build it. They want to hear from the folk who use it. 👏

✅ Totally anonymous
✅ Open to anyone holding a C1, C1+E, C or C+E licence
✅ Feeds directly into future international vehicle safety rules

This is a genuine chance for drivers to influence how these systems get designed, rather than just having to live with whatever lands in the cab. If you've ever had a system ping at you for a wheelie bin or stay quiet when it shouldn’t have, that's exactly the kind of experience they're after.

Miles says: "Safety tech works best when the people using it get a say in how it's built. If you hold the licence, take the survey." 🦺

Give it a share and pass it on to any drivers you know. 🙌
