Significant progress continues to be made on our Falkland Islands project, being delivered by SFI Developments Ltd, Southbay Civil Engineering Limited’s international subsidiary company, with the earthworks programme now 98% complete. This includes the installation of the core material and rock armour that will form the new causeway, with materials sourced from a local quarry.
The project team is currently constructing the reinforced concrete bank seat, which will support a steel ramp connecting the causeway to the existing pontoon barge.
Alongside construction progress, the project has now achieved 157 days without a reportable accident.
Recently, the workforce also took part in a mental health and wellbeing workshop delivered by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which was streamed live to colleagues in the Falkland Islands from one of our sites in the UK.
Supporting the local economy remains a key focus, with skilled labour from across the Falkland Islands contributing to the project and local suppliers providing materials wherever possible.
In line with our commitment to reducing our environmental impact, no waste has been removed from site, with all steel and timber being retained within the compound for recycling.
Once complete, the new causeway will support increased offshore operations for the next 30 years, providing long-term benefits for the Falkland Islands and its economy.
