Significant progress continues to be made on our Falkland Islands project, being delivered by SFI Developments Ltd, Southbay Civil Engineering Limited’s international subsidiary company, with the earthworks programme now 98% complete. This includes the installation of the core material and rock armour that will form the new causeway, with materials sourced from a local quarry.

The project team is currently constructing the reinforced concrete bank seat, which will support a steel ramp connecting the causeway to the existing pontoon barge.

Alongside construction progress, the project has now achieved 157 days without a reportable accident.

Recently, the workforce also took part in a mental health and wellbeing workshop delivered by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which was streamed live to colleagues in the Falkland Islands from one of our sites in the UK.

Supporting the local economy remains a key focus, with skilled labour from across the Falkland Islands contributing to the project and local suppliers providing materials wherever possible.

In line with our commitment to reducing our environmental impact, no waste has been removed from site, with all steel and timber being retained within the compound for recycling.

Once complete, the new causeway will support increased offshore operations for the next 30 years, providing long-term benefits for the Falkland Islands and its economy.

We welcomed representatives from the The Lighthouse Charity to our site at Victoria Deep Water Terminal for a discussion around wellbeing, mental health, and the support available to those working within the construction industry.

The session was attended by members of our project team, with colleagues from our Falkland Islands operations also joining via MS Teams. We were also pleased to be joined by representatives from our client, Heidelberg Materials UK, highlighting the shared commitment to promoting wellbeing and supporting those working across the industry.

The Lighthouse Charity provides a range of free and confidential support services for construction workers and their families, covering emotional, physical and financial wellbeing.

Sessions such as these help to raise awareness of the resources available and reinforce the importance of looking after ourselves and those around us.

A big thank you to the Lighthouse Charity for taking the time to speak to our workforce, and for the valuable work they continue to do across the industry.

A very successful evening for Southbay last week at the prestigious ICE North East Robert Stephenson Awards, where we were proud to win the Medium Sized Project (£1m–£5m) award for our North and South Shields Pier Repairs project.

To make the evening even more special, we also received Highly Commended for our project at Redcar Bulk Terminal Upgrade.

A huge well done to our teams, clients, partners and supply chain who helped make these projects such a success.

We are pleased to continue progressing our Tilbury Dry Dock Development contract, with a recent ground-breaking ceremony marking the official start of construction.

Current works include the installation of temporary works, the manufacture and installation of precast concrete planks, and ground reinstatement activities.

Once complete, the new facility will support the servicing and maintenance of the 24 strong clipper boat fleet operating along the River Thames.

In addition to delivering vital infrastructure improvements, the project is also creating positive social value through the employment of apprentices and the use of local supply chain partners.

Works are progressing well on our Ridham Stabilisation Phase 2 project, where we are delivering essential works to stabilise a 140m section of the Eastern Quay.

The scheme involves the construction of a new sheet piled structure connected to the existing mass gravity wall using tie bars, helping to secure the long-term resilience of the quay infrastructure.

Our project team has successfully installed both the front and rear sheet piled walls, with works now progressing on the installation of tie bars of varying lengths ahead of reinstating the site footprint and constructing a new reinforced concrete relieving slab.

Crack repairs to the front face of the gravity wall are also ongoing as part of the programme.

The works are being carefully delivered within a live operational environment, requiring close collaboration with the client and stakeholders throughout the project.

To celebrate World Earth Day and mark Sir David Attenborough turning 100, we carried out a litter pick as a small way of giving back to the environment and supporting a cleaner local area. It also gave our staff the opportunity to work and socialise together in a different setting.
