🎉 40 Years. Four Decades. One Family Business.

This year marks an incredible milestone for our Managing Director, Mark Richardson, who is celebrating 40 years with James Burrell Builders Merchants.

Four decades later, the business has changed enormously, and Mark has been at the heart of an incredible period of change, investment and growth.

Established in Gateshead in 1877, James Burrell has been a Richardson family-owned business for generations. What began as a business serving its local community has grown into one of the leading independent builders’ merchants in the North East and Yorkshire, with a reputation built on service, knowledge and strong relationships with our customers.

During Mark’s time with the company, James Burrell has continued to evolve alongside the construction industry. The business has expanded its branch network, broadened its product offering, and invested heavily in logistics, technology, transport and infrastructure.

Some of those milestones have included the opening of new branches across the region, significant investment in our fleet and facilities, and the £4.5m investment in our Billingham branch, our largest investment to date.

One of the most important parts of that journey is that James Burrell remains a family business.

Today, Mark is joined by the next generation of the Richardson family, Rob Richardson and Nick Richardson, who both serve alongside Mark on the Board of Directors.

From everyone at James Burrell, thank you, Mark, for everything you have contributed to our team, our customers and our industry over the years, and for everything you continue to do.
