⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I found other installers just wanted to sell me what was most convenient for them."

That's Noel, after ringing round for quotes.

It's a fair thing to be wary of, and it's hard to spot from the outside — so here's the tell.

Watch what they ask about first.

If the conversation opens with the product — this panel, this battery, this brand, this deal that ends Friday — you're being sold the thing they've got in the van. If it opens with questions about you — what you use in a year, when you're actually in the house, whether anyone's home during the day, have you got an electric car, what's the roof facing — then they're designing something.

You can't tell the difference from a brochure. You can tell it inside two minutes of a conversation.

We'd rather you used that test on us than take our word for it. 👍

He rang round for quotes, same as everyone does. Here's what he found.

"I found quite a few numbers who were faceless."

That's Mark, and it's the bit we keep coming back to. He didn't want the cheapest and he didn't want the biggest — he wanted somebody local he could actually speak to, who'd tell him which system suited his house rather than which one cost the most.

A few things he mentions that we were pleased to hear:

🔹 We sent someone out to look at the roof before anything was agreed — "giving me advice, not just telling me how they were going to do it" 🔹 The install team left no trace. "You wouldn't think they'd been there" 🔹 The follow-up calls afterwards, just checking how it was running 🔹 And the payment structure — a portion held back until he was happy, so he wasn't handing over everything up front

Five stars from Mark. Thanks for taking the time to say it on camera — it's a big ask and we appreciate it.

Install of the Week: Newcastle 📍

A Powerwall 3 for the house, a Gen 3 Wall Connector for the car, and 18 Aiko panels feeding the pair of them. The full set.

The bit we're most pleased with is the roof. Have a look at the first photo: panels across the main ridge, then a run squeezed down the narrow section joining the two gables — three separate orientations by the time it was finished. Plenty of installers would have laid out the easy rectangle and left it there. Working the awkward angles is the difference between 14 panels and 18.

Here's what it adds up to. The house gets through roughly 4,000 units of electricity a year. The roof makes 6,223.* That's 156% — half again more than they actually use.

Which is exactly why it's paired with a car charger and a 13.5 kWh battery. Between them, they soak up the surplus instead of it being sold off cheap at lunchtime and bought back at full price at teatime.

☀️ 18 × Aiko 480W panels (8.64 kWp)
🔋 Tesla Powerwall 3 — 13.5 kWh
🚗 Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector
📈 6,223 kWh a year*
💷 £1,700+ off the bills a year**

If you've got an electric car and a roof full of dormers and odd angles, that combination is far better news than most people assume. Send us a message and we'll tell you honestly what yours would do. 👇

From 15 October, we can't install a home battery in your loft any more.

It's not a ban. The wiring regulations have changed on where batteries are allowed to live — lofts are out, so are bedrooms, and so is anywhere that forms your way out of the house: hallways, landings, stairs.

Slide 4 is one of ours. Fitted to the regulations that applied at the time, still compliant, and staying exactly where it is. If you've already got one up there, there's no deadline and nothing you need to do. The rules aren't backdated.

Slides 6 and 7 are where they go now — outside wall or garage. Out of the house, out of your way, and a fair bit easier to get to when it needs looking at.

No garage, no utility room? You can still have one. An outside wall is where the majority of our installs end up these days.

And if you're getting a quote from anyone right now — us or otherwise — slide 9 has three questions worth asking before you sign anything.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I have already recommended this company to a family member."

That's E Brown, on Trustpilot — and of every review we've had, this is the one we'd pick.

Here's why. Leaving five stars costs a customer nothing. If the company turns out to be a let-down afterwards, nobody blames the person who left the rating. But recommending a firm to your own family is different: you're putting your name on the line with somebody you'll be sat opposite at Christmas.

Nobody does that unless they genuinely mean it.

Eddie's system, since somebody always asks: 10 panels, a 15 kWh battery, and a design that should generate around 140% of what the house gets through in a year — more than it uses.*

Thank you Eddie. And to the family member — we'll look after you too. 👏

Most of our work arrives exactly this way, which is the bit we're quietly proudest of. If somebody's recommended us to you, drop us a message and we'll take it from there. 👇

🏆 Sigenergy Gold Installer 2026.

Recognition from the manufacturer for how their battery systems get designed, installed and supported.

Not really an award for the company, though — it's for the lads on the roofs and the team who answer the phone. We don't subcontract, so there are actual names behind this one.

Thanks Sigenergy, and thanks to everyone who's had us on their roof this year. 👏

Install of the Week: Newcastle 📍

Nine panels. That's the whole array.

It's a small roof, and by the usual logic it isn't worth the bother. Except the usual logic is built around a house that's empty all day.

Our customer works from home. That changes the maths completely.

Here's why. Solar generates hardest around midday — which, for most households, is exactly when nobody's in. That electricity gets exported for a few pence a unit and then bought back at full price come teatime. If you're in the house during the day, you use what you make at the moment you make it, and a unit you use yourself is worth several times a unit you sell.

Add a 9 kWh Sigenergy battery to carry the evening, and nine panels on a small roof turns into £800+ a year.

☀️ 9 × Aiko 515W panels (4.6 kWp) 🔋 9 kWh Sigenergy battery ⚡ 5kW Sigenergy inverter 📈 3,708 kWh a year* 💷 £800+ off the bills a year**

If you've looked at your roof and written it off as too small, it's worth a second opinion — particularly if there's someone home during the day. Send us a message and we'll do the sums properly. 👇

Part one of a series we'll keep adding to: the things we get asked most weeks, answered straight.

"If they limit my export, it's not worth doing."
Export is the last stop, not the first. Most of what you generate is used in the house or stored in the battery before anything leaves the property. An export cap limits what goes out to the grid — not what you make, and not what you use.

"Solar panels and batteries are a fire risk."
A compliant install is a designed electrical system, not a gadget bolted to a roof. MCS-certified design, proper DC isolation, RCD protection, and a battery running its own management system. Fitted, tested, signed off, then documented.

"It's far too expensive for us."
There's no single price, because there's no single house. The system gets designed around your roof, how much you actually use, and what you want to spend. The only figure that means anything is the one worked out for your property.

"It sounds like an absolute faff to sort."
Survey, design, install, sign-off. We handle the MCS certification and the DNO notification. You're not the one chasing your network operator.

Got one we haven't answered? Ask it below — the more sceptical the better. The best ones go straight into part two.

What you actually save depends on your property, system size and how you use energy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I wasn't expecting much revenue so early on in the year, but we were getting free electricity from day 1."

That's Jane Maclean. And the bit worth noticing is the month she had it done: February.

February, in the North East. The stretch of the calendar where the sun clocks on late, knocks off early and spends most of the middle bit behind something grey. Jane had 28 panels and two batteries fitted, expected next to nothing until the spring, and was generating from day one regardless.

We're posting this now for a reason. September is when people start telling themselves they'll look at it in the spring. Two things happen if you do: you pay full price for every unit of electricity between now and then, and come April you're in the queue with everybody else who said the same thing back in September.

The sentence straight after that one in Jane's review was "looking forward to the summer months" — and she'd already had a winter's worth of generating before summer showed up.

Thanks Jane 👏

If you'd rather not have this same conversation with yourself again next September, send us a message. We'll tell you honestly what your roof would do, and there's no hard sell waiting at the end of it. 👇

Before we quote anybody, we're looking at four things. None of them is a dealbreaker on its own — together they tell us how much there is to work with.

Which way the roof faces. South does the most, but an east–west split is genuinely good: it spreads generation across the whole day instead of piling it into midday.

How much shade it gets. Chimneys, dormers and next door's sycamore matter far more than the raw size of the roof.

What you're spending now. The more electricity you use during daylight hours, the more of your own generation you keep rather than export.

Whether there's an EV or a heat pump — now or coming. Big future loads change the sizing, and it's far cheaper to plan for them than to retrofit around them later.

Count how many you tick. Two or more and it's worth a proper conversation.

And if your house isn't right for it yet, we'll tell you that as plainly as we'd tell you the opposite. We'd rather lose the job than sell you the wrong system.

Postcode and a recent bill, in the comments or a message, and we'll take a look. The checklist is linked in the first comment 👇

What you'd save depends on your property, system size and how you use energy — which is exactly why we look before we quote.
