A view can change the way a room feels. 🌳

A Pell-Stevens Architects, we look for opportunities throughout a home to make the most of its surroundings. A carefully placed window can draw your eye across the garden to the wider landscape, creating a moment to pause as you move through the day.

Here the generous opening frames the hedgerow, fields beyond and sky. Morning light, passing clouds and the changing seasons continually reshape what you see. The architecture stays still, but the experience of the space keeps changing.

It's these everyday connections to the landscape that help make a home feel personal and alive.

Every good project starts with a conversation.

We worked closely with our clients to develop a brief around how they wanted to use their home and garden. They wanted space to exercise, relax and spend more time outdoors, so the design brings a home gym together with a sheltered terrace.

With doors opening onto the garden and warm lighting in the evening, it's a space that works throughout the day. Taking time to understand what matters to our clients helps us create places that feel right for them.

What are you looking to make space for in your home? Get in touch, we'd love to have that first conversation and discuss your project.

Where craftsmanship meets complexity. 🔨

A glimpse behind the scenes at our latest project in the heart of the New Forest, a contemporary extension to a historic cob cottage. At this stage of the build, the importance of craftsmanship, precision and careful detailing is becoming increasingly clear.

The complex roof structure brings together the exposed timber and steel rafters, creating a carefully crafted geometry the responds to both the existing cottage and the constraints of the site. With the external wall also forming the site boundary, every junction connection and change in direction has needed to be carefully considered.

For us, good architecture isn't simply about how a building looks when it is finished. It is in the decisions made at every stage, the materials selected, the way they meet, and the craftsmanship that brings the design to life.

This project is a great examples of how contemporary architecture can sit sensitively alongside historic fabric.

More progress to come, follow Pell-Stevens Architects to see how this project develops from structure to finished detail.

Circulation spaces are more than simply routes between rooms, they play an important role in shaping how a home feels and is experienced each day.

A generous roof light brings natural light deep into the heart of the plan, transforming the hallway into a bright and welcoming space. As the light changes throughout the day, it highlights the texture and warmth of the timber doors, frames, and natural flooring.

The result is a calm, uplifting transition between rooms, where thoughtful use of daylight and natural materials brings warmth and character to everyday movement through the home.

A statement entrance sets the tone for a home.

Strong architectural lines, generous glazing and a sheltered doorway creates a clear focal point within the front elevation. Contrasting dark frames and definition, while the light exterior finish keeps the overall design fresh, balanced and welcoming.

Carefully considered proportions and layered forms guide the eye towards the entrance, giving the home a distinctive sense of arrival. The result is a contemporary elevation that makes an impact while still feeling warm and inviting; a home designed to welcome you and your guests inside.

A strong connection between inside and out can often be achieved through simple, carefully considered architectural intervention.

Here, these sliding doors create a seamless transition between the living space and the new garden patio. The minimal frame, slim sightline and expansive area of solar control glazing brings more natural light deep into the room while opening up uninterrupted views of the garden.

A recessed curtain rail with returns allows the curtains to close neatly against the walls, keeping the glazing and surrounding architecture uncluttered without blocking garden views. Together, these details help the interior and garden feel like one continuous living space throughout the year.

Thoughtful design begins with understanding our clients lifestyle and daily routines.

For this project, the brief was to create a bright, practical and connected kitchen and living space. By working closely with our clients throughout the design process, we developed a strong professional relationship and shaped each detail around their priorities, daily routines and long-term needs.

The finished space brings cooking, dining and relaxation together, with natural light and a clear connection to the outdoors. The result is a considered, welcoming home that meets the brief and reflects the our clients live day-to-day.

A successful barn conversion begins with understanding and respecting what is already there.

At Pell-Stevens Architects, we have extensive experience in working with listed properties and historic buildings. Out approach is to retain the character that makes each structure unique while carefully adapting it for its new use, and meeting our clients requirements.

Original brickwork, exposed timbers and natural marks of age are not simply details to preserves, they are an important part of the buildings story. By making these features central to the design, old and new can sit comfortably together, creating spaces that feel both contemporary and deeply connected to their past.

A strong connection between home and garden begins with thoughtful routes, generous openings and carefully framed views.

For this recently completed retrofit, Art Deco-style windows and doors maximise views into the garden and create an easy flow between inside and out. Perfect for everyday living and hosting summer BBQ's!

Planning a retrofit that brings you closer to your garden? We'd be happy to discuss the possibilities.

Could your barn have potential under Class Q?

Class Q permitted development can provide a route for converting qualifying agricultural buildings into new homes, without following the traditional full planning application process.

At Pell-Stevens Architects, barn conversions are a key area of our expertise. We have particular experience navigating Class Q projects in and around the New Forest National Park, where understanding the building, its agricultural history, planning context and sensitive rural setting is essential.

With national planning policy continuing to place significant importance on protecting and enhancing our National Parks and rural landscapes, local knowledge and a carefully considered design approach matter more than ever.

From assessing whether a building could qualify under Class Q, through design and submission, we can help identify opportunities, navigate constraints and make the most of an existing agricultural building.

Do you have a barn with potential? Get in touch for an initial conversation.
