Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Co. "Regenerate, Revitalise and Rebuild Folkestone"

The Folkestone Harbour Company has commissioned leading architects Sir Terry Farrell & Partners to draw up plans for the redevelopment of Folkestone Seafront. The ambition is to build upon the substantial regeneration work that has already taken place in the Creative Quarter in Folkestone’s Old Town. Once regenerated, the seafront will increase its attractiveness to visitors and residents providing a new public realm and benefitting the local economy.

To answer the famous Folkestone question - Are the fountains on? No, not for the next few months. They have been put into hibernation for the winter to prolong the life of the system. The fountains will be back up and running for Easter 2027.

On 5th October 1942, bombs dropped on Folkestone Harbour destroying the centre of the Customs House building that stretched across what is now the car park. Bombs also fell on Bradstone Road and the Pier. Two people were killed and two injured as a result. After World War II, as most of the building was destroyed, the ruins were taken down and all that remains is the small luggage room we use today for community events.

Next month, from 6th to 11th November, Customs House will be home to a special exhibition illustrating the role Folkestone Harbour played during both World Wars. Our flowerbeds through the Harbour Station will be adorned with poppies for quiet reflection to remember all who have served our country in conflicts throughout the centuries. We will remember them.

Since the fire at the Burstin on Sept 19th, access to the Harbour has been difficult. We have been working hard to make the Harbour as accessible as possible for everyone.

From Friday 25th September to Monday 28th September:
Pedestrian access is via the Boardwalk and Viaduct as per normal.
The vehicle and accessible route is via Harbour Street, Lower Sandgate Road and Marine Terrace where there is a new entrance onto the Harbour Arm site.
Parking for this weekend at our main car park will be pay and display, for £5 all day.

The Marine Parade ANPR car park is open and working as normal.
Buses are stopping at the bottom of The Old High Street, on Tontine Street for the Harbour area.

There has been a lot of community support for those working and staying at The Burstin since the fire on Saturday morning.

We would like to express our thanks to the staff of The Burstin for their expert care of their residents; to the emergency services and to all the other community groups, councils and professionals who have been working to support residents and local businesses since the fire.

If anyone is looking for work then there are these opportunities available.

On this day in 1919, Winston Churchill, aged 44, as the Minister of War and Air, signed the book at the Mole Café at Folkestone Harbour. The Harbour played an important role as the embarkation point for nearly 10,000 people heading to the continent as part of the war effort.

The eight books contain names from King George V, Winston Churchill and Wilfred Owen to many people's grandfathers and great-grandfathers, and were digitised by the charity Step Short to mark the centenary of the war.

The Mole Café was situated on the Pier near to the refurbished area where Gaia + Grind, Gaia Studios and the Tasting Rooms are today.
