⚠️ NOT ALL DOUBLE GATES ARE BUILT THE SAME ⚠️

There’s a huge difference between knocking up a pair of gates and properly constructing quality gates that are built to last.

We regularly see:
❌ No ground bolts
❌ Flimsy bolts and catches
❌ Too few or undersized hinges
❌ Gates fitted too close to the ground
❌ Incorrect ironmongery
❌ Inadequate posts and fixings
❌ “Frames” that are simply pieces of timber screwed together

A quality mortise & tenon gate with properly jointed, rebated frames and central rebates takes time and skill to make.

Large gates are heavy and have to withstand wind, weather and years of use. The construction, posts, hinges, bolts and fixings ALL matter.

Will properly constructed gates cost more? YES, ABSOLUTELY.

You’re paying for better materials, skilled construction, heavy-duty galvanised ironmongery and a job built and installed properly.

Two quotes that both say “double gates” can be for two completely different products.

🪚 I’m seeing it more and more lately…

Adverts for bespoke gates, quality workmanship, professionally made, built to last — all the right words.

But sometimes I look at the actual work and, as a qualified joiner, the construction simply doesn’t back up the advert.

The problem is, most customers wouldn’t know the difference.
And why should they?

You shouldn’t need to be a joiner or understand gate construction to be confident that the person you’re paying understands it themselves.
Building a timber gate isn’t simply a case of screwing some timber together and making it look good from the front. The construction matters.

✅ Has the correct construction method been used for that particular gate?
✅ Is it correctly braced for the way it’s hung?
✅ Is the ironmongery suitable for its size and weight?
✅ Are the posts, supports and fixings fit for purpose?
✅ Has it actually been designed around the individual opening?

There isn’t one construction method that’s right for every timber gate.
But there are definitely wrong ones.
Anyone can use words like “bespoke”, “quality” and “built to last” in an advert.

Talking the talk is easy. The workmanship has to back it up.

Before spending your hard-earned money, do your homework. Look at previous work, read genuine reviews and ask questions.

A knowledgeable tradesman should have no problem explaining how your gate is going to be built — and why.

Another recent installation completed 👌

Two new made-to-measure timber gates, built to follow the existing brick arches and keep the look in keeping with the property.

Every opening is different, which is why each gate is made to measure — not only to look right, but to fit and function properly.

This particular job happened to be in Buckley, literally about 20 yards as the crow flies from where I grew up — brought back a few memories doing this one! 😊👍
