Yesterday our team helped on the fell of a dead Oak, next to frequently used footpath. The tree was retained and coronet cut, to mimic a natural failure.

The timber was retained on site, increasing habitat for bugs, fungi and bats. Long term it will improve the ecosystem, providing for birds, mammals and bugs and beetles.

The tree lives on, even in death!

THIS TREE DEFIES ALL THE SCIENCE!

This tree was originally, one of two trees, forming a symmetrical canopy with its neighbour. They would have worked together to support each other, shared resources, protected each other. In 2013/2014 during a storm of high winds, its neighbour, the left side tree failed. The two trees formed a co-dominant, symmetrical canopy, and the science indicates they would have shared a root system.

Trees respond to weakness by firming or strengthening the weak areas of the trees, by building reactive wood, in the roots and buttress roots, the main stem, scaffold branches etc. Therefore, we expect the right side to focus on the right side of canopy, but the tree would have done little to strengthen the left, outside the forces associated with the weight loading lean, after all its neighbour/partner had that side covered!

So, with the sudden loss of left side tree, how is the right side tree still standing? The exposure to new forces on a weaker side that the tree hadn’t experienced the full before, plus the extended/unbalanced canopy on right side, and suddenly has to change and stengthen the roots and timber.

All the science suggests this tree should have fallen over, or in grounds of health and safety been felled, or reduce, as it’s likely the tree would have failed in the next storm. Yet, over 10 years on it’s still standing, no branch failure, and it’s thriving.

This tree does certainly show the strength and potential trees have, if left to their own devices!

OUR TREE PLANTING PROJECT 8 YEARS ON! 2017-2025!

It’s great to visit an old site and see our work thriving, 8 years on!

In 2017, we removed a declining ornamental Cherry tree in this driveway position, removed the existing soil, and replaced it with Amelanchier, (Amelanchier arborea ‘Robin Hill’.

This year we took the chance to stop by, and we are thrilled to see the tree thriving in 2025!

We are immensely proud of our team, who during the heat of last week, successfully removed three Ash trees on a delicate site, negioating the restful grave stones of a cemetery for our LPA, and delivering on time and in budget. Thanks team!

The site posed it challenges, namely no access for machinery, other than the SG40 stump grinder, so it was down to the good old fashioned drag!

Feedback is key, and thankfully our client shared their feedback.

“Just wanted to let you know that Leo and his team successfully removed the 3 diseased ash trees last week at the cemetery.

They did an amazing job and left the area clean and tidy. They managed the area well whilst carrying out the works and dealt with any questions/queries from visitors extremely professionally.”

“Thank-you for conducting yourself and your team in such a professional manner when representing the local Authority.”

Thanks for an outstanding effort!
