During the winter months plants in a greenhouse become very stressed because of the colder temperatures, lower light levels and in greenhouses air that does not move. Combine all these factors together and some plants will damp off, seedlings can rot and Botrytis can become a major problem.

In many cases greenhouses are heated using paraffin heaters. Not only do these put moisture in to the air but they can also produce fumes that can kill roots, in particular Geraniums.

Winter is on its way! Here is you November gardening calendar!

1. Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds
2. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging
3. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year
4. Prune roses to prevent wind-rock
5. Plant out winter bedding
6. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem
7. Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well
8. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks
9. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden
10. Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting

Recycled Water For Irrigation — Is It Safe?

Reclaimed water - also known as recycled water - is a process in which treated wastewater is utilized for various purposes such as toilet flushing, industrial processes, agricultural and landscape irrigation. Water recycling process offers significant financial and resource savings.

Recycled water is water recovered from domestic, municipal, and industrial wastewater treatment plants that has been treated to standards that allow safe reuse. Properly reclaimed water is typically safe for most uses except human consumption.

Wastewater is not reclaimed water. Wastewater is untreated liquid industrial waste and/or domestic sewage from residential dwellings, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities. Gray water, or untreated wastewater from bathing or washing, is one form of wastewater. Wastewater may be land applied, but this is considered to be land treatment rather than water reuse.

Why reuse water?

The demand for fresh water in the world is growing as the population increases. This demand can potentially exceed supply during times of even moderate drought. Conservation measures, such as irrigating with reclaimed water, are one way to help ensure existing water supplies are utilized as efficiently as possible.

The rainy season has started, but don't let it get to you. Not only is rainwater free but it's better for plants than tap water as it contains more nutrients. Also, unlike hard mains water, rainwater doesn't leave lime-scale deposits or increase the alkalinity of the soil.

The best way to collect it is in a water butt connected to a downpipe. If you put it on a stand, you'll be able to fill a watering can straight from its tap. If you have a big garden, you can connect two butts to a single downpipe by using a flexible hose link kit. Water butts do more than provide water for your plants, some can even be attached to pressure washers.
