Roof window frame beams installed into an existing roof structure.

Working within an existing building requires careful planning before anything is cut or fixed. The steel has to suit what’s already there, connections have to work with the existing structure, and the installation has to be carried out without disrupting the building around it.

Every job gets the same level of care, this one was no different.

The universal beam has been the default structural section in UK construction for decades, and the reason is straightforward structural efficiency.

Bending stress in a loaded beam is highest at the extreme fibres, the top and bottom faces. The I-section concentrates material at the flanges where it’s needed most, while the connecting web resists shear along the beam’s depth. The result is a section that delivers high bending resistance relative to its weight.

UBs are available in a wide range of serial sizes and weights, are straightforward to cut, drill, weld and connect, and work with standard fabrication processes without specialist equipment. For spans and load requirements that fall within their capacity range, nothing has replaced them.

Residential refurbishment and house extension in Cambridge.

Scope: fabrication and installation of multiple flitch plates and structural beams, primed finish. Steel lifted to roof level using a Hiab, supplied by . Full installation completed in one day.

Flitch plates are one of the more common structural elements in residential refurbishment and extension work. They are used to strengthen existing timber beams by sandwiching a steel plate between them. Multiple plates on a single project requires precise fabrication to ensure each one performs to the structural engineer's specification.

This is how a steel package moves from our workshop to your site.

Every element fabricated to the structural drawings, connection plates welded and drilled, primed and checked before it gets anywhere near a vehicle. By the time steel is loaded for delivery it's been through the full fabrication process, cut, welded, drilled, primed, checked against the drawing, and cleared.

When it arrives on site it's ready to go in. No modifications, no surprises, no time lost while the installation team waits for something that should have been sorted in the workshop.

That's the standard we hold every delivery to.

Steelwork fabricated and installed by SFES in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire.

This commercial project involved the fabrication and installation of structural steel beams, including curved beams, all finished in primer. The curved beams were produced by a specialist steel bending company and installed by our team on site.

One of the more technically interesting challenges on this project was locating existing rebar within the structure before fixing, solved by laser scanning the existing structure to identify rebar positions before drilling, ensuring a smooth and accurate installation.

Fabrication completed in one day. Installation completed over two days.
