RURAL BRITAIN IS NOT A FAR-RIGHT FANTASY.
Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, the Minister for Rural Affairs and Nature, described a picture of pubs, warm ale and a black Labrador as a “far-right nostalgic vision” of Britain that “never really existed”. She was warning about how the far right might campaign at the next election.
This is a divisive and deeply out-of-touch choice of words from a minister responsible for rural communities.
For people whose everyday lives include a country pub, a pint and a dog, her words can sound like a dismissal of their way of life. Her target was far-right political messaging, but she chose familiar aspects of rural life to illustrate it. That risks alienating the very communities she is supposed to understand and represent.
The far right does not own our countryside, our pubs or our traditions. Pride in rural life is not political extremism.
Farmers and rural communities need a minister focused on their livelihoods, businesses and future. Her job is to understand rural Britain, earn its trust and deliver for it.
Rural Britain deserves better.
