One Fleet home went from an £86.52 June energy bill to just £4.02 after adding solar, battery storage and home EV charging.

And that’s not the full story.

In June 2025, they also exported 489.8 kWh back to the grid and received £73.47 for it - more than their electricity bill that month.

The difference came from the whole setup working together: solar, battery storage, EV charging and the right overnight tariff.

What difference can solar actually make to your energy bills?

For one Wi******er home, the numbers speak for themselves:

☀️ September bill: £92.53 → £7.08
⚡ Grid electricity: 175 kWh → 55.9 kWh
💷 Export credit: £40.37
🔋 Estimated annual export: 6,270 kWh

That’s based on the customer’s own Octopus bills and account data. Every home is different, but it shows what the right solar setup can potentially do.

Can solar run a heat pump? Partly, and the five things below decide how well.

01 Size for winter. A heat pump works hardest in December and January, exactly when solar output is lowest.
02 Check the SCOP. It tells you how much heat you get per unit of electricity.
03 Add a battery. Charge on cheap overnight rates, run the heat pump from stored power at peak.
04 Radiators often need upsizing for lower flow temperatures.
05 The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can cut the cost. Check current grant levels on GOV.UK.

We install all three. Free survey, MCS certified.

267,032 solar installations in 2025. Heat pumps, 60,000. Batteries, 40,000.

Solar outsold heat pumps roughly four to one. It is still the cheapest, fastest change most UK homes can make to their energy bill.

Three things changed for UK homeowners this week.

VAT on domestic electricity dropped from 5% to 0% on 1 October. It runs to 31 March 2027 and is worth roughly £45 a year off a typical bill.

Then the bad news. Cornwall Insight forecasts the January price cap at £1,999 a year, a 16% rise, about £276. Ofgem sets the real figure in late November.

And 291,000 solar installations went in across the UK in the 12 months to August. Over 195,000 of those were homes.

If January is the month you want to feel differently about, now is when you plan for it. Free survey, no obligation.

The biggest mistake people make when buying solar? Buying the system someone wants to sell them, rather than the system they actually need.

Too many panels. Not enough panels. An expensive inverter when a more affordable one would do the job.

Our Solar Technical Report is designed to cut through the noise.

Tell us about your home and we’ll help you understand what makes sense for your property, so when you start comparing quotes, you know what you’re actually looking at.

Solar shouldn’t feel complicated. ☀️

You don’t need to understand every inverter specification, efficiency figure or technical diagram to make a good decision.

You need to know:

→ How many panels make sense for your home
→ How much power your system could generate
→ Whether you actually need a battery
→ What size system is right for you
→ Whether you can trust the installer
→ And ultimately, whether solar will save you money

That’s exactly what our Solar Tech Report is designed to help with.

Answer a few questions about your home and we’ll give you a clearer picture of what you actually need - without drowning you in technical jargon.

Should you get bifacial panels? Probably not.

They're the panels that make power from the back as well as the front. The back catches sunlight bouncing up off whatever is underneath them.

That works well if the panels are lifted up with something pale below, so they work for ground mounts, flat roofs, and carports. You might get 5 to 10% extra over gravel, and up to 15 to 20% over a white flat roof.

On a normal tiled roof you get almost nothing. The panels sit about 10cm above dark tiles, so there's nothing back there for the light to bounce off. You pay more for the panel and get no extra power out of it.

So if you've got a field, a flat roof or a carport, they're worth a look. If you've got a standard house roof, put the money into a better quality standard panel instead.

Your roof doesn’t need to face perfectly south to make solar worthwhile.

According to research from the New Economics Foundation, a typical 4kWp solar system with a 5kWh battery could save around £823 a year on a south-facing roof, with east, west and even north-facing roofs still showing strong potential savings.

The exact figure depends on your home, energy use and system size, but roof direction alone shouldn’t rule solar out.

Two solar quotes can look similar on paper and still be thousands apart.

Before you sign anything, check what’s actually included, whether the installer is MCS certified, how the savings have been calculated, what warranties you’re getting, and who is handling the paperwork.

A good quote should be clear enough to compare properly, not leave you guessing.
