A new addition to the herd today 💪
Lovely Simmental bull purchased at the Beef Bonanza sale today.
He's come all the way up from Daventry so it might be a bit of a shock to the system going out on a Peak District hill with some spiky woolly things!
His pedigree name is Sharpshooter but we need something a bit more catchy, ideally starting with S.
Archie wants "Splodge" and mum likes "Sinbad". Any other ideas gratefully received because I'm not yet convinced by either of those 🤣

A few fencing repairs on a VERY steep bank this afternoon!

I got a call from a local out for a walk this morning who'd spotted the posts were snapped (thanks Highlands cows!) so popped out to replace them before the cows escaped

It was lovely working under a blue sky and amongst the wildflowers again

The Highlands calves have started arriving this week and we got them in yesterday to check over, tag etc. Three happy healthy calves 😁
Also yesterday morning, the little guy in picture 4 was born. He was a breach birth and needed some help by which time his mum had decided she wanted nothing to do with him. So we've brought him home and made him a pen in the barn.
He's a big calf and I suspect he was all crunched up the wrong way inside the cow because his fetlocks on his back legs keep collapsing forward and his front legs are all crossed over. He couldn't stand at all yesterday but we have now got him able to stand up (even if one of his legs wants to go a different direction to the others!)
Next job is persuading him to suck from a bottle!

It's been such a wet start to the year that the occasional sunny day (or even a few hours) just feels so good!

Sheep scanning day. A little below the usual average at 135% but still a good number of lambs on their way in march.

A massive thanks to Nairn Wylie for a great job again and for being so great with the kids

Slightly unusual cargo today!
We took some unwanted kayaks to for the polar bears to play with!
They will get them prepared (filled with treats) before letting the bears loose with them. I can't wait to see the videos of them playing with them!

Obviously we had to go in see the bears (through the fence). They're just the most amazing creatures 🐻‍❄️

Blood testing on the youngsters today as part of our herd health plan.
This allows us to check for infectious diseases such as BVD, IBR and Lepto and make sure that we are either clean or put in place a plan to address any issues.
