How much room for error is there on a rail possession? Almost none, and that is the whole challenge.

The window of opportunity when it comes to operations teams surveying the track is short, fixed and booked well ahead. Track alignment is measured in millimetres and tunnel clearances have to be exact, so everything has to be captured properly first time. You cannot pop back tomorrow for the bits you missed.

We have been working on track, tunnel and bridge schemes across the UK since 1982, so the standards and the data formats rail teams need are second nature to us.

Merrett Survey recently carried out terrestrial laser scanning at Weston-super-Mare, on behalf of North Somerset Council where we laser scanned the north jetty at Birnbeck Pier.

This data was combined with an authorised drone survey to capture the top deck, which was unsafe to access.

Ground-based terrestrial laser scanning produces high-accuracy point clouds, which can be used to create 3D models for engineers to work with when designing replacement components or when planning remedial works.

The LiDAR onboard the drone is able to capture a high accuracy point cloud with true RGB colours. The LiDAR is also able to pe*****te dense foliage and map the terrain in forested areas where traditional ground-based surveying would be very time consuming and expensive.
