Imagine everyone who relies on some form of financial support being put into one room.
There isn't enough room for everyone.
They're told:
“At some point today, a huge bag of money is going to drop. We won't tell you exactly when. There isn't enough for all of you. First come, first served.”
What happens?
Absolute carnage.
A stampede. Everyone desperately trying to grab what they can before it's gone.
Now imagine that, just as the money drops, the fire sprinklers go off and the lights start flickering.
Some people can't get through the door.
Some get halfway there and are thrown back out.
Others are desperately trying and ringing for help.
And while all of that is happening…
The money is disappearing.
That is pretty much what happened to British farmers yesterday.
At 10am, the Rural Payments Agency opened Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive.
A scheme designed to pay farmers to carry out environmental work, support food production and improve the resilience of their farms.
For many farms, this isn't a nice little bonus.
It's income that has become increasingly important to the viability of the business.
By 3:48pm, it was over.
Less than SIX HOURS.
Enough applications had been received to allocate the entire £233 MILLION budget.
And during those few frantic hours, farmers and agricultural consultants across the country were battling technical problems, desperately trying to get applications submitted before the door slammed shut.
Some made it.
Many others didn't.
We keep asking:
“Why are farmers leaving the industry?”
Well yesterday gave us a pretty spectacular example of why.
Because when a £233 million farming support scheme can effectively be exhausted in less than six hours, perhaps the question should be:
Why has producing our food become so financially difficult that thousands of farmers are desperately racing one another for that support?
