West Hill Heights was a remarkable transformation of a tired chalet bungalow into a striking contemporary home in East Devon.⁠

The potential of the property was always there. Set on an elevated plot surrounded by woodland and countryside, the location was exceptional, but the original house didn't make the most of it.⁠
⁠
The design focused on strengthening the connection between the home and its surroundings. The main living spaces were positioned above the garage, allowing the family to feel immersed in the treetops and enjoy views across the landscape. Large areas of glazing bring natural light deep into the home while ensuring the countryside remains a constant backdrop throughout the living spaces.⁠

While contemporary in style, the home also incorporates natural materials that work well in its setting. A substantial stone wall at ground level provides a strong connection to the local landscape, complementing the clean lines and modern finishes used elsewhere in the design.⁠

A look at Hillcrest Barn, our recently designed new-build home in South Devon, due to begin construction in early 2027.

Set on an exceptional rural site, the project began with plans approved under Class Q to convert the existing barn. We then successfully secured planning permission for a replacement dwelling by demonstrating a betterment over the original scheme. The new design retains the character and proportions of the existing barn, while creating a spacious contemporary family home. See the final slide for what currently stands on the site and the potential that our team have unlocked!

With incredible 270-degree views across the surrounding landscape, the home has been designed to make the most of its position. Large areas of contemporary glazing, including corner windows, will bring in plenty of natural light and open up far-reaching views from throughout the home.

Organic growth for rural East Devon.

We’ve just wrapped up the concept scheme for a new 7-home development in the heart of East Devon.

Our goal wasn’t just to add housing, but to help the village grow sustainably. We’ve designed a mix of 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes to cater to different stages of life, ensuring a balanced community feel.

Critically, the architecture is designed to reflect the character of the nearby village. Rather than standing out, the scheme is designed to "nestle" into the local environment, respecting the rural vernacular and the landscape.

The design blends natural materials with bold textures, including corrugated metal, stone, and soft timber, helping to create a contemporary rural aesthetic while supporting the sustainability goals of the project.

Revisiting our Linton House project today - a new build home set on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.🌿

Making the most of the beautiful views and creating a strong connection to the garden and landscape beyond was central to the design, with glazing playing a key role throughout the home.

Here you can see the living area opening onto the patio via aluminium sliding doors that meet at the corner, creating wide uninterrupted views across the landscape. From the kitchen, industrial-style bifold doors frame the garden from the island and can be fully opened during the summer months to extend the living space outdoors.

Our clients also chose limestone flooring both inside and out which, combined with flush thresholds, helps create a seamless transition between the spaces.

We’re so pleased with how this home came together - exactly as we had imagined it.

Planning approved!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

We’re pleased to share that approval has been granted for two new dwellings. This time it was following our previous, lesser known, Class E approval on the site.

By utilising the established fallback position, and working collaboratively with South Hams District Council, we were able to shape a smooth and well-considered planning application. Careful review of local planning policy, recent council decision-making, and early engagement through pre-application advice helped create a clear route through the process.

The approved homes use an upside-down living arrangement to make the most of the fantastic views, with each plot carefully positioned to capture outlooks to the south and west while avoiding overlooking towards each other and the main farmhouse.

Covered terraces and balconies are integrated into the overall design, reading as part of one complete architectural scheme. They provide private outdoor spaces and solar shading, which feels particularly well timed given the recent heatwave!

A great result for the project team, and an exciting step forward for the site.

Looking back at this project in Exexter, where we remodelled and extended our client’s home to create a much stronger connection between indoors and outdoors - something that comes into its own during the summer months.

Designed for a young family, we created this generous open-plan living space, with distinct areas for cooking, dining and relaxing. Aluminium bifold doors open from two sides of the room onto the patio and garden, with flush thresholds helping create a seamless transition outside.

The interior style is relaxed and contemporary, while the single storey extension itself was designed with longevity and sustainability in mind. Vertical timber cladding adds warmth and texture externally, paired with a zinc roof chosen for its durability and ability to weather beautifully over time.

Some stills from inside Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club 🏏

As well as the changing and sports facilities, the clubhouse was designed to become a real social hub for both the club and wider community. The upstairs entertaining space and balcony make the most of the incredible setting, with far-reaching sea views across the pitches and coastline beyond.

It’s always rewarding to work on projects like these - spaces that bring people together and become such an important part of the local community.
