This beautiful Hawk Moth visited today. It’s stunning and I’m surprised at how sticky the feet are. This makes it easier for them to cling to things when they take rest throughout the day.
I think this is a Convulvulus Hawk Moth which is an immigrant from Africa. They struggle to overwinter in the UK, often going underground. But when larvae can be seen, it’s normally on Bindweed (Convulvulus) as the name suggests………if ever there was a reason to keep Bindweed!!

I’ve heard all the excuses for not watering the garden. Guys please WATER YOUR PLANTS! If you don’t they may die! And what a waste of money, time and effort that would be!
Mature trees and shrubs should be ok. Most perennials, annuals, newly-planted plants and ESPECIALLY container plants may not be coping with this continuous dry heat. Today in Silverton my van registered 34.5 degrees and hardly any breeze!
Best time for watering is early morning (best if you have a slug problem) or evening. Better to give a really good soaking every couple of days, rather than a little bit. Be sure to water at the base of the plant (the roots!)……..…..you’ll be surprised how many people I’ve seen holding a watering can over the top of the plant 🤔. If a plant is really struggling, wilting, defoliating and looks like it’s about to die, then water immediately no matter what time of day. You’ll be surprised how quickly they pick up again.

Saw this beautiful Tawny owl at work today. We thought it odd to see it in daylight, motionless, eyes closed, didn’t mind that we were very close. We thought it was ill or injured and looked like it had an injured wing. Off we went to get a box with the intention of contacting an owl sanctuary. As we approached the owl again, it opened its eyes, looked at us and effortlessly flew off with perfect flight.
Obviously we were delighted, and thankful we didn’t put it in a box, but also a bit confused.
Turns out, young Tawny owls can let their wings hang loose behind their backs and just relax and sunbathe to get vitamin D 💕. Thank goodness we didn’t put it in a box.
This information might be helpful to anyone finding themselves in a similar situation

This beautiful clematis! It’s planted at the base of a Sorbus - a mountain ash which died off and was chain-sawed down to a stump. The poor clematis never really grew well. Maybe producing one flower and perhaps reaching around 60cm. I actually thought it had died. I’m guessing with the tree gone, the roots may have gotten too warm with direct sunlight? Anyway, the mountain ash starting growing again (very quickly) from the base and is now a perfect host for the clematis to climb. This is the most amount of flowers of seen on it and it’s probably around 1.5 metres high. What a stunning flower it has, almost Dahlia like.
I think it may be Clematis Franziska Maria? I think I remember a label years ago

First time I’ve ever seems bees mating! The courtship lasted an impressively long time 😁. Are they Carder bees? If so isn’t it early for them mating in May? And does the male die after the courtship??

Lupins! And they’ve not been eaten by slugs or aphids…..yet (plenty of aphids around at the moment). Be aware that lupins are toxic to pets. Our dog ate one when she was little. She was fine but I think she was tripping her nut off 😬
