Making use of the winch from today doing some dam conservation work for

It is a fantastic work system we came up with to overcome moving heavy sections of holly down a steep dam bank.

Had to speed the video up slightly to fit it under the 3 minute bracket, let me know what you think..

Another successful run of tree light installations from ‘the dream boys’ (it was a misheard radio call for ‘tree boys’ but it seemed to stick 😂) This year we were at all very different locations and conditions but we delivered with our usual flare

Love this idea from RHS Garden Wisley

Our Arboriculture team recently had to cut down a large Pinus contorta tree in the Pinetum which was around 80 years old as unfortunately the crown was dying off. It had been in poor health for a while due to a fungal decay that affects tree roots.

We decided to retain the stump and have air blasted it to remove the soil around the root plate to beautifully showcase what the tree’s mature roots looked like under soil. It provides a fascinating insight into what’s going on underground!🌳

Nice to come back to this tree after a busy summer to address some concerns with upper crown union stability. We installed a couple of ratchet straps as a ‘temporary’ solution with the hope to retain what is left of the habitat features.

We discovered some aerial roots in the tree soil creating their own new shoots, pondered over them being epicormic or epiphytic and discussed pros and cons of pruning.

Had all the toys out for this pretty technical job for Exeter homes trust. Trees have been in serious decline for years and unfortunately aren’t recovering. I think that recent ground works and poorly timed pruning could have been the reason, if so the root system is compromised and where I would normally leave standing deadwood I feel that it’s a shame for these magnificent pieces of yew to go to waste like that.

We will be planking these trees to supply local artists and craftsmen with an amazing one of a kind pieces of timber!

Unfortunately this tree had to come down, wrong species planted in this location. Will give space for struggling adjacent native trees.

Had a film crew working in the garden filming butterflies so they set up a camera for us as well! They were all blow away by our efficiency 🔥

Great day spent halo releasing an amazing veteran birch and taking the height down on a dead turkey oak so the rest can stay standing with all its beautiful habitat potential. Thanks for the help .mca

🌳 Creating Safe Havens for Bechstein’s Bats 🦇
We have been busy building habitats in trees to support one of the UK’s rarest bats — the elusive Bechstein’s bat. These incredible creatures rely on ancient woodlands and tree cavities for roosting, so providing carefully crafted habitats helps protect their populations and promote biodiversity.

By preserving and enhancing natural spaces, we can give these rare bats a fighting chance to thrive. Every tree hollow, bat box, and preserved woodland area plays a part in their survival. Let’s keep nature wild and full of life!

Had a great day creating maternity roosts and various habitat features for Barbastelle bats - an incredibly rare species that are present in this woodland in East Devon The Douglas Fir trees are being removed to allow the native woodland to regenerate. This a novel way to retain the trees as a habitat feature and capitalise on benefits for the wider ecology of invertebrates, fungi and birds but allow the new woodland to thrive.
