Project Complete: Exeter College Centre for Rugby

We’re proud to have provided architectural support throughout for the delivery of the new changing rooms and teaching spaces alongside a new state-of-the-art outdoor sports pitch for Exeter College Centre for Rugby.

This project is a brilliant collaboration with , , the Rugby Football Union (RFU), and Exeter Chiefs - investing in grassroots rugby and the wider Exeter community.

Portfolio Pick: City Arcade

A sensitive city centre development in Exeter, delivering student accommodation above ground-floor retail within a tight urban site.

This 4-storey scheme responds to the historic character of Fore Street, with massing shaped through consultation with Historic England and the City’s Heritage Officer.

Metframe construction and ensuite pods enabled rapid delivery, meeting the academic year deadline while achieving a BREEAM “Excellent” rating.

The LD/A Unit is nearing completion!

We’re thrilled to see The Brook taking shape—a purpose-built inpatient facility at Langdon Hospital designed to support adults with learning disabilities and/or autism. Seeing the project come together on-site has been incredibly rewarding, and we can’t wait to see it in use.

We’re excited to see this carefully considered scheme move forward in Dartmoor National Park, delivering 24 new homes—11 of which are affordable.

Benefitting from its Local Plan allocation, our team worked to develop a scheme that balanced constraints and opportunities, ensuring the design complements the surrounding village character. A detailed character appraisal helped shape the scale, massing, materials, and detailing, aligning with the Dartmoor Design Guide while also embracing a contemporary approach.

This year, we’re celebrating 35 years of Grainge Architects! As part of this milestone, we’ll be revisiting our portfolio and sharing standout projects from across the many sectors we’ve worked in over the years. Our ‘Portfolio Picks’ will highlight some of our most memorable designs—past and present.

This week’s Portfolio Pick is The River Yealm Hotel—an award-winning development that transformed a once-prestigious hotel, left vacant for several years, into luxurious riverfront apartments. The project beautifully combines conversion and new-build elements to bring new life to this spectacular location.

Site Progress: Barton Grange, Sandford

Great to see excellent progress on-site at Barton Grange, a bespoke development of five contemporary homes on brownfield land in Mid Devon.

We collaborated closely with our client and design team to secure planning approval and develop a robust technical package for this agricultural-inspired scheme.

The new homes are arranged around a communal courtyard, echoing the traditional farmstead while integrating contemporary design and low-energy principles. Looking forward to seeing this development take shape.

Feeling festive at Grainge 🏠🎄📐

A bake-off competition wasn’t enough this year, so naturally, we levelled up with the Grainge Gingerbread House Decorating Competition!

Plenty of creative chaos and festive fun filled the office as our team brought their A-game (and plenty of icing) to craft four incredible masterpieces inspired by iconic architects:

1. “Frank Lloyd Bite: The Prairie Crust”
2. “Zaha Breadid: Curves and Crumbs”
3. “Antoni Gaud-icing: The Sweet Mosaic”
4. “Mies van der Dough: The Minimalist Gingerbox”
