Interesting job this morning winching out this windblown oak butt across an old leat. Skidded up the track to where a lorry can access it.

Being able to spot the early signs of grey squirrel and deer damage to your trees allows you to put effective mammal management in place before significant damage is done.

Five questions that can help you identify the cause of the damage are...

🌳 what type of damage is it – browsing, gnawing or rubbing?

🌲 what is the height of the damage?

🌳 what time of year has the damage occurred?

🌲 are there teeth marks present? If so, what size are they?

🌳 are there other signs of mammal activity? footprints and droppings etc.

Checking your answers against our mammal damage identifier in our "grey squirrel and deer damage to trees" guide can help ensure you put the right management measures in place.
