We're still really proud of this 1.73MWp solar PV installation we did for Numatic, maker of the famous Henry vacuum cleaner earlier this year.

This was the most recent system we installed for Numatic (the first was back in 2013), and we used AIKO high-efficiency panels and Sigenergy hybrid inverters to build a PV array that generates enough electricity to manufacture 500,000 Henry's every year!

Today we're looking back at this installation we did for Boscastle Farm Shop down in Cornwall - what a stunning location!

Solar is a great option for farm shops and similar businesses - they often have a large, unshaded roof, and can greatly benefit from Solar PV and battery storage due to their high usage during the day. Keeping food chilled or frozen, plus running air conditioning to keep the temperature indoors pleasant, can significantly increase demand, especially during a heatwave like we saw this year.

Let's talk batteries!

Adding battery storage to your solar PV (new system or retro-fitted) can make a huge difference to your energy savings and ongoing costs, just like the 1.8MWh installation at Langdon Hospital shown in the video above.

Sometimes, adding a battery system and using it properly can make sense even without solar PV.

Batteries can help you store any excess electricity your panels generate to be used later, but can also be set to charge when prices are low, then discharged when prices are higher. They can help you overcome local grid limitations, and, when set up correctly, also provide backup in the event of a power outage.

We're pleased to announce two of the SunGift team have joined the board as directors.

Adam Simmonds and Adam Ogden have worked for SunGift for a combined total of over 21 years. In that time, they have gathered a wealth of knowledge of the solar industry, with extensive experience out on site installing a range of domestic and commercial systems.

They fully understand the high standards of work SunGift demands, which is why we are very pleased they have agreed to take on director level roles as Installation Directors. This role will allow them to oversee our installation processes at director level to ensure each and every job is completed to our high standards. They will be supporting and championing our site teams day to day, managing installations and sharing their knowledge with on-the-spot training.

What if every NHS site or manufacturing business with a bit of spare land could generate most of its own electricity?

At Langdon Hospital, Devon Partnership NHS Trust has shown what this can look like. It combined available land, government funding and modern solar and battery technology to meet more than 60% of the hospital's electricity needs from its own site.

The results speak for themselves: nearly £185,000 saved a year, more than 145 tonnes of carbon avoided a year, and a hospital that is more independent from the grid and better protected from volatile energy prices.

Gabriel Wondrausch, Director at SunGift Solar, said: "This is particularly exciting because it provides a model that can be replicated across NHS and healthcare estates throughout the UK."

DPT has taken a leading role here, and its work gives other trusts a proven route to net zero that also makes financial sense.

"This has been one of the most complex projects we've ever undertaken." Gabriel Wondrausch, founder and Director of SunGift Solar.

Building a solar and battery storage system is one thing. Building one alongside an operational forensic hospital without disrupting clinical care is quite another.

At Langdon Hospital, our team installed 1,628 solar panels, a ground-mount system using low-carbon steel from Solarport, and one of the largest battery storage installations (1.8MWh of Sigenergy batteries) of its kind in the UK . We also laid many miles of cabling to link the solar energy hub to the hospital through two separate electrical connection points.

Along the way we dealt with technical and logistical challenges in an environment where safety, security and continuity of care always come first. The project was finished on time, on budget and with no disruption to clinical operations.

This was only possible because of close collaboration with the estates, clinical and leadership teams at Devon Partnership NHS Trust. Their support and openness throughout made a demanding project run smoothly.

Our new solar installation at Langdon Hospital covers about 3.5 acres, and it generates 1.042 MWp, with 1.8MWh of battery storage capturing excess electricity to use later. That is enough to meet over 60% of the hospital's annual electricity needs. Here's how:

1628 solar panels to get the most generation out of a limited footprint

Sigenergy hybrid inverters and SigenStack battery storage manage power flows in real time. The system balances demand, reduces losses and makes the most of on-site use, even when solar generation is lower.

Solarport's low-carbon steel ground-mount structure has 66% less embodied CO₂ than conventional mounting frames, so the build itself has a lighter footprint.

Together these give Devon Partnership NHS Trust better energy security, resilience against future price shocks and major long-term savings. They also open up the option of exporting surplus power to the grid for extra income.

Devon Partnership NHS Trust's new 1.042MV solar PV and 1.8MWh battery system at Langdon Hospital is expected to save nearly £185,000 a year. The Trust can now put that money into patient care instead of spending it on electricity.

Phill Mantay, Chief Executive at DPT, said: "This investment not only supports our commitment to sustainability but also ensures significant cost savings that can be redirected into enhancing patient care."

The impressive 1.8 MWh batteries store extra solar energy during the day so the hospital can use it overnight and at times of high demand. This protects the Trust from peak grid prices and helps it cope with pressure points such as heatwaves, when air conditioning pushes demand up.
