Our clients often use "fire alarm" and "smoke detector" as if they mean the same thing. They don't, and if you're responsible for a business premises, the difference matters.
A smoke detector is a standalone device. It detects smoke and sounds a local alert, which is useful, but limited. If it goes off in an empty room, nobody knows.
A fire alarm system is something else entirely. It's a network of interconnected devices linked to a central control panel, and in many cases, to a monitored alarm receiving centre that can initiate a response even when the building is empty.
For most UK businesses, a proper fire alarm system isn't optional. It's a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and must meet British Standard BS 5839.
We've written a short guide that breaks down the differences, what the regulations require, and how to know if your current setup is adequate.
