One thing people often assume about renovations is that once you've decided what you want, the hard part is over. Realistically, that's usually when the real planning starts.

Layouts. Materials. Timelines. Trades. Budgets. Access... and about 50 other decisions that nobody talks about on Grand Designs or 60 Minute (definitely not) Makeover.

Good projects are rarely ones that move the fastest. They're the ones that are planned properly from the beginning. A bit of patience at the start can save a lot of headaches later on.

People often see the finished photos. πŸ“Έ

They don't always see the phone calls, deliveries, trades turning up, materials being delayed, measurements being checked three times and Chris staring at a wall wondering how somebody managed to build it like that in the first place. 🀯

That's building.

A good job isn't just about knowing how to fit things together. It's about planning, communicating and solving problems when something unexpected crops up. Because trust us, something usually does. Not complaining though. It'd be a boring job if every day was the same.

What's the most unexpected thing you've ever found during a DIY project? πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈπŸ”¨

One thing we wish more homeowners knew before starting a renovation...πŸ’

You don't need to have every single decision made on day one. But, you do need a good plan. πŸ—’

We've seen people spend weeks worrying about choosing taps, paint colours and door handles before they've thought about budgets, layouts or timelines.

Start with the bigger picture. How do you want the space to work? How will you use it? What's not working now? The smaller details can usually come later.

A bit of planning at the start can save a lot of headaches further down the line.

Got a renovation you've been thinking about? What are you struggling with?

One of the reasons we enjoy renovation work so much is that no two projects are the same. 🏑

Renovations keep you guessing. Older houses especially. You open up a wall expecting one thing and find something completely different. Sometimes it's a quick fix. Sometimes it's a bit of head scratching.

Every house has its own story. Every homeowner has different ideas about how they want to live in it. That's what keeps things interesting.

Although we'd be quite happy if some of those surprises stayed hidden occasionally. πŸ˜‚

If you've got an older property, what's the strangest thing you've discovered in it?

Being a builder in Devon often feels like a part-time weather forecasting job. 🌀

You check the forecast. Then you check another forecast. Then you ask someone else's opinion.

Then the weather does something completely different anyway.

Anyone working outdoors will know exactly what we're talking about. But we'd still rather deal with a bit of bad weather than work in an office.

Wouldn't swap it. Plus... Chris quite enjoys looking into weather forecasts. πŸ€“

You start off fitting a kitchen, then somebody says: 'While you're here, could you just...' Every builder has heard those words.

Before you know it, you're discussing flooring, decorating, and moving doorways. We're not complaining. It happens quite often. But the funny thing is, those extra ideas can often make the biggest difference to the finished space.

Because 'while you're here' can either be a great idea... or a very expensive sentence. πŸ˜… So we advise to get a list of them ready for our first chat.

Older houses always have a story to tell. The problem is, they often wait until you've started the renovation before telling it. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Hidden pipework (or tennis courts - long story). Unexpected wiring. Walls that aren't quite where you expected them to be. We've definitely had a few surprises over the years.

That's why experience matters with renovation work. Yes, we follow the plan. But it's also about adapting when you discover something that wasn't on the plan in the first place (tell that to the architect πŸ™Š).

Trust us, every older property has something hiding somewhere.

There's no better compliment than a customer asking you back.

Over a year ago, we renovated the downstairs of Chrissie and Martin's home.

Now we're back again. πŸ”¨

This time, we're building an extension and carrying out another phase of renovation work to help them make even better use of their home.

A lot of our work comes from recommendations and repeat customers, and honestly, that's something we're proud of.

When someone trusts you to work on their home once, that's great.

When they trust you enough to call you back for the next project, it means even more. 🧑

The job is well underway now, and we're looking forward to showing you how this one develops over the coming weeks.

We've recently completed a new 10-metre fence and composite decking area for returning customers Neil and Nikki.

The finished result looks nice and straightforward. The process wasn't.

Before the first fence panel could go up, Dave had to negotiate his way through what felt like half of Devon's plant life. πŸ˜‚

Once the greenery was under control, we could crack on with the job and transform the space with a smart new fence line and a low-maintenance composite decking area.

A lot of gardens have corners that don't really get used. Not anymore.

Thanks again to Neil and Nikki for having us back. 🧑
